I don't know about Ford on a national level, but my local dealership actually gets into the mod market (diesel truck country here) and they sell the stuff they know works - and back it up.

And aside from looking "cool" (they look SUPER!), do they really provide any noticeable improvement?

I've heard many a story about drilled rotors cracking and negligible improvement or reduced improvement from slotted and drilled rotors.

I don't stomp on them enough to really be a good judge on that one - but I've towed with them on a hot summer day on 6% grades and felt the rims after the torture test. All was good for temp and I really felt in control. My front bakes are similar to this, but older.

Oh.... I can see them through the stock rims and they still look cool to me.

I forgot to reply to this - the EBC website mentions this problem and the holes are not drilled all the way through to address this issue.

Hello fellas, it's been a long time since I have posted but I lurk quite often and I used this writeup to do my backing plates and I wanted to say thank you to gunnerdog for taking the time to do this.

The only thing that I have to add is that it is imperitave to replace the hub/axle seal when doing this. Even when using the jaw puller to pull straight out on the hub, the seal simply is not strong enough to pull away properly without breaking; it just rips in half. The seals did exactly the same thing on both sides.

If needed I can find the 'National' brand part number for the seals but I don't have it with me currently.

The newer seals come off much easier...My 99 broke in half also on both sides.
Also the replacements will come off easy.

Thanks also to you two guys for the heads up on the seals. I just ordered the Dorman kit off amazon. Mine is a 2003 with 241,000 miles and it doesn't look like the parking brakes have ever been off, so I'd appreciate a part number for those seals if anybody has one.

Crap I'm done

Gunnerdog,

Thanks so much for your great pictures, made the job so much easier. I have to admit that I also forgot to remove the inner seal from the axle... until I looked closer. That was the only part that slowed me down, I ordered my parts from Amazon but afterwards wished I would have used RockAuto as the pricing was similar but RockAuto provides everything you need. Thanks again for you assistance.

Nice Job!!!

I had to do the same job at least 2 years ago. I'm glad to hear that Rockauto has the backing plates now. At the time I did mine, the plates were only available from Ford, along with the entire hub and bearing set for a wallet busting 300something per side. Since mine were rusted, and I figured every set in a junk yard would be not long for the world either, I found a yard in Texas that would help me. I wish I could remember the name, but the guy was cool. He took them off and sent them to PA for 35bucks each or something. Not bad considering the only other option I had.

I know I didn't use a 3 jaw puller, but I can't remember what I did now. Probably adapted a yoke puller, because that's all I have. The brake rotors did not want to move, so I had to do the bolt / nut trick in the caliper hole.

Very nice write up. I LOVE having a parking brake!!

I got the spindle nut socket off the shelf at my local NAPA. It was $21 and fit perfectly.

NAPA AUTO PARTS

It's their Evercraft brand.

Thanks for this write up!!! I will be doing this job this weekend.

Yesterday while driving I heard the loudest noise I've ever heard my truck make, a loud thumping. It sounded like the rear end blew up or the drive shaft came loose. So I pulled over and everything was intact and as it should be. So I drove very slowly with the window down and it sounded like the brakes were dragging so I figured I'd just baby it home and check it out. Well I tore into the brakes when I got home and A couple pieces of metal came out and the parking brake shoes were destroyed. What happened was the backing plates rusted out and the clips that hold the parking brake shoes came off and got jammed between the shoes and drum. That would explain the sound of ball bearing in a washing machine that I heard.

Time for a complete brake rebuild.
