Here's pic's of my plate change. They were toast. The paint on the plates wasn't up to my spec's so a light sand blast and 2 coats of rust bullet..I'm going to get new pins tomorrow because they are way too short that came with the plates and also that came in my spring kit. I had an old subaru one that was 1/8 longer that worked great so I have to hunt them down. as you can see I have an early 99 with the caliper in front on drivers side. Had to get two right plates. Called Carl from Dorman and he worked with me and my parts store..Tomorrow all goes back together. I used new hub seals and a new oring on the axle..

Roger that for the 99, I needed 2x r/h plates....ended up modifying the lh to a rh configuration. The Dorman kit was not bad quality and came with rubber boots and pb shoe retainers. Too bad the kit didn't have 2x rh for my installation. My fix was a little bubba (no offense to anyone of that name ) What torque is used for the backing plate retainer bolts? I cant seem to find it. I just torqued mine up to 'alot'.

Just tighten em down really good with 1/2 ratchet not really important..just holds the caliper LOL
To anyone else they might want to call Dorman to see if they will work with you.
1800-868-5777 ext5172 Jim... Tell him you need two right plates for early 99 with dr caliper on front of axle.

Thanks for the write up!

I am so glad you did this. I just checked the brakes on my 05 that I bought used last February and found first the front had the wrong size rotors on it. They were to small so I assumed someone put rear rotors on the front. When I checked the back brakes I had a big surprise. The brake backing plate had rusted so bad that the parking brake retaining pins had pulled through and the parking brake pad on one side was rubbing against the heads of the wheel studs. It cut groves in each stud. Both sides were like that. Also the slide pins were frozen in the caliper mounting bracket on the drivers side front and rear. I need my truck so for now I just removed the parking brakes but now that I found this I will try to get the parts and fix it over the holiday weekend. Great write up!

Great article good job!

My book says: For new bearings, ratchet back five teeth or notches (1/8 turn) on the hub nut. Five notches must be felt during this operation in order to have performed it correctly.

For used bearings, ratchet back seven teeth or notches (1/6 turn) on the hub nut. Seven notches must be felt during this operation to have performed it correctly.

Is this the same as your source or is 99 different or did ford update it?

Dick

Nice write up and pics. I hadn't seen this thread before and just replaced mine last night and took a bunch of pics. They were actually in pretty good shape - well, until truck was stolen and when they recovered it the wheels/tires were gone so it got dragged up on the slideback and the backing plates were pretty much destroyed.

Dealer had them as full-assemblies which was pretty nice for the installation-side of things!!

However, this part of the instructions that say to back the nut 5 clicks or 7 clicks. Back it from what? Cuz they click about 30 times putting them on!!! The guy ran them until the axle rotation began to drag them backed them off...

Tighten to 60 ft lbs and back off 60 deg for used or 45 for new bearings...I had a hard time telling the clicks...I made a disc with 60 deg on it and put marks where i needed to.

Found this So Happy!!!!!!!

After finding this I made my decision to do this repair myself. Talked to dealer and they wanted $311.00 for the complete set up for one side. Found the plate for both sides for $67.00 at Oriellys then went to Rock Auto found them for $47.89. then I went to Oriellys and they price matched the parts so I bought the pates and shoes and hardware kit for $83.00 Thank for this Info!!!!

gonna change the plates

Thanks for the video. I would like to know the size of the big socket to unscrew the bearing and the size of the puller needed. I will pack the space in between the two plates with Shell waterproof grease I think it is 2000 extreme.. And the name of that big socket . thank you again for the interesting and complete video.

There is no size.. Just ask your parts store for your application.. For my 99 its a 4 prong tool for the special nut...

My Parking Brake Backing Plate was looking a little rough, but good enough to use again. I cleaned it up and used BBQ paint because of its robust qualities.

I must add that the parking brake lever ("lever thingy") is usually the culprit in sticking parking brakes. I replaced that hardware, but it wasn't real cheap.

Don't really need a puller as all you are doing is ruining the seal. The orig seals sometimes don't come off easy so they kinda break in half....You can use pry bars or sometimes they just come off easy if you are lucky..I think I used a slide hammer on one and prybars on the other..

Remanufactured calipers? What brand are the rotors? Cost?

Remanufactured, yes. Those are EBCs [LINK], my local Ford dealership sells them and I found them here [LINK].
