metal to metal??

My rear end was leaking (that's what happens when you get old, haha) so I got a gasket to fix it. The pinion seal was replaced last year and is good. This was a small leak that kept getting worse so today was the day to fix it. Pulled the cover off and I couldn't believe it, no gasket to scrape off, just some silicone. Did it come from the factory that way or did some idiot do this?

That is correct. No gasket from the factory.

Thanks Pete, that's amazing that they would do that. I got a gasket from AutoZone and put gray stuff on both sides. Rick, I have some of that stuff, it is really good, I always use it when every thing else fails.

I like the Permatex Blue RTV. Seems to work pretty well. As said, no gasket from factory
