how to wire up a 302

I,m putting an 85 302 in a 1970 F100 not sure how to wire the new motor to the old truck. New motor does not have points.Need help with ignition alternator and distriburater. I know its not spelled right. Motor has an edelbrock intake and carb so no computer need for fuel injection.

You can put your old distributor in and wire it like it was. I do not think you will gain anything with the one that is in there now. Others with more knowledge may chime in later.

You should get a electronic distributor , you can get the ones to use with your wiring that you already have

That has a TFI distributor, so it's best to ditch that. Get a DSII distributor and ignition module from a late 70s truck, the wiring is dead simple:

That 1.1ohm resistor shown is the pink resistance wire you already have running from the ignition to the coil.

Thanks for the help, never had any wires in this truck and motor came out of the trunk of a car so no wires there either. Working on it this weekend will keep you posted.

You need to figure out if the motor is a roller before you try and find a diffrent dist. If it is a roller you need a dist. with a steel gear. Otherwise you will shear the gear off, since roller cams are harder than non-roller cams.

The motor is an 85 302 I believe it came out of a truck or van due to the dip stick is in the block for a rear sump oil pan. I know its not a roller motor it has a high energy hydraulic flat tappet cam, lift .456 duration 268. I sent you an e-mail(firemedic230) not sure if you got it but I saw your pics of your truck in another post and looked to me you have already been down this same road. What is wrong with my dist.? Do I really need a different one or will the one I got work just to get it started and broke in?

Like the other people were saying, a durspark dist. and module out of a newer truck, or you can get a petronix kit for your older one to convert it to electronic vs points. That's what I used to get mine started whit the carb.

thats a fuel injection dist and coil don't use it. use ford sixes wiring diagram and get all the stuff from a late 70 truck, and there should be a three wire connector behind the driver side valve cover one is oil press. one is coolant temp and the other is coil pos. wire the neg wire is in the harness that fordsix posted

They are decent and I believe a site sponsor as well. They have been the only source for a lot of oddball parts for my Eagle.

found a dist. coil with a blue cap, and a module with the blue strip where the wires enter all came out of a 78 ford truck with a 5.8 liter motor. Did I get the right one?
