Transmission replacement. Auto or Manual?

Transmission replacement. Auto or Manual?
I think the E4OD in my '96 is on the way out. I'm going to run it for as long as it clings to life, but I don't expect for it to be very long. Should I just have the E4OD rebuilt, or should I switch to a manual transmission? What all is involved with a manual swap? Is it cheaper to rebuild an automatic that is not quite dead yet than to wait until it dies? Basically, what are your thoughts on this?

Okay, I priced ZF 5 speeds last night, and they were much cheaper than prices that I've seen for rebuilding automatics. I'm going to take it to a local trans shop around here and get a quote for rebuilding the E4OD in present condition. Unless it's much cheaper than the ZFs I priced, I'm going with the ZF. If I go through with this, I WILL need help. I'll keep you in mind, Kris. Has a write-up been done on this swap?

The junkyard one won't be newly rebuilt like the link I posted, though. I am curious, though. How much is it going to run you? PM me if you don't want to put it up here for whatever reason.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of all the other stuff needed, tranny tunnel insert for manual, shifter, pedals and clutch master cylinder, clutch kit, manual PCM or reflashing of the auto one. Also, if you want the factory look, steering column trim and gear selector block off plate. If you could find a donor truck for cheap it makes it a ton easier.

That's a good idea. I think that's probably what I will do. Where should I start looking for performance clutches, just to get an idea. Again, it will be while before the swap happens, I'm just wondering.
