I read a post a long time ago about putting a 160 stat in a 5.0 mustang.

Then I read an article in the paper about doing this (just yesterday to be exact), and it suggested that you don't put one in a motor.

Reason Why:

When the motor starts up (temp below 183 or something like that) the computer sends additional fuel to the motor for cold start up. Then when the motor reaches above 180 something, the computer kicks the motor into driving mode, and shortens the amount of fuel supplied.

If a 160 stat was put in the computer would be force to think that it was in cold start up at all times.

Problems with putting in a 160 stat:

High emissions
Bad gas mileage
increased cylinder wash from excess fuel
shortend engine life from increased cylinder wash

I'm sure that you already have heard this, but there may be others out there that haven't.

I'm not sure if you can even get one for the 4.0L with out modifing a similar 160 stat.

i'm thinking i'll go with 180, i'm used to the hot lightning that even with a 160 will tend to run around 180

but i know what your saying about open loop, i didn't think it stayed in open loop that low

I recommend that you stay with the OEM 195 thermostat...

just talked to my buddy who was a ford/lincoln tech for years and builds and tunes ford's

he says the truck goes from open to closed loop at 130 degrees

he said Pre 96 on eec4 that it was 160, so i am going with the 180 per his recommendation
