well I don't have one.. However, I am a mechanic. I understand how they work. And in the case with these trucks, you will be sucking in more hot air then it is even worth.. excluding diesel applications! I really wish that s&b would make a nice kit for the 460! they have some awesome products...

Someone send me a temp sender and guage.. I will prove that an open element in the factory location runs extremely close to ambient temps. Where is the test that Lew did on it?

ON EDIT: See pages 2 & 4 in this thread.. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-intake-2.html

This is my intake

This is the intake in my diesel..

I built something kinda similar for my 460-I used a big K&N in the stock location, built a sheetmetal box to surround it, & insulated that with firewall insulation. I used the stock duct up to the core support. Then I built a duct that goes from there to the lower left grille opening. Seems to work pretty well.

ambient air temp. sure.. cold air, hardly. fyi.. My stroker had the same filter set up as yours. Mt turbo spooled up so much faster! I would argue that at freeway speeds you would be sucking in some cool air.

Im with Strokin and Lew on this one.. They do work. Its all in the Design of them!

When I get some more time tonight ill post some links from NLOC with proof they work.

I have a 3" CAI with a 11" open element filter. Works great.

I did kind of a "redneck CAI" mod on my '97 speed density. The hood is bent at the hinges anyway from frozen hinges by the PO. Original intent was to cut some rectangular inlet holes in the front edge of the hood and cover them with mesh, but I decided to try it through the grill first. Believe it or not, it did make a slight noticeable difference. It also now has audible intake sound. The hood was all but completely blocking the air inlet.
Crude and ugly, but functional....................

Also what many misunderstand is the benefit of CAI is not just "cold" or "Hot" air
, but actually more to do with FLOW and less restrictions since ALL factory intakes have restrictions as a design and almost all aftermarket kits improve. 2ndly if you stay with stock exhaust little improvement will ever be notice.

OK. So with an open element we are seeing temps extremely close to ambient. Anyone care to explain how you can build an intake to pull in air colder than ambient?? It cannot happen, ever! So technically even a true CAI can only pull ambient air temps, just like the open element.
