How to inspect a distributor

I got a DSII dist from the jy the other day, hoping to revert my 351W back to a DSII system.

I have the module in place, and now have a complete harness, but I was wondering what to look for, before I install this dist? I mean, is this dist any good? I got it out of a '84 XLT with a 351W. Shaft doesn't seem to wobble or anything, but I haven't cleaned it up yet. How do I inspect it, and what do I need to look for? Should I go ahead and replace the pickup module while I'm at it?

Make sure that the mechanical advance weights are not sticking. Check for excess play of the shaft both top and bottom. Check that the gear is solid to the shaft. Sometimes the shear pin that holds it on will break. Check that it rotates easily and smoothly. It may need lubricated. Check that the vacuum advance works by sucking on it (use a clean hose). I see no reason to change the pickup unless you are pretty sure it is bad. I believe that there is a lot of info here on vacuum advance, just do a search.

Thanks.

I've heard that there are timing curve optimizations that a person can do to these DSII distributors. Can you point me to some good information on this? Specifically for the 351W engine?

Thanks again!
