New Problem I haven't seen on here

I have a 96 f-350, 4X4, CC,PSD, Automatic trans, that sometimes when I am driving down the road will just fall out of gear or will just go into neutral how ever you want to say, if I reach up and put the shifter into neutral and then shift it back into drive it almost allways will go back into gear and I can drive on down the road like nothing is wrong. It might do this 2 or 3 times in a day or not do it for weeks. I have checked to make sure the shifter lever is tight under the dash but the shifter does seem to have a lot of lplay in it. Does anyone have any ideas?
thanks RB

Humm... new one to me also..I'm guessing you already checked this, but did you check the connection on the trans for play/loose connection? Maybe it's slipping just enough to kick into neutral? (although you would think it would pull down into 2nd, Humm)

I have a manual but it might be worth putting anti-slip in just to see if it helps. If it does than you know

I am relatively new to all this and I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, if you would explain I would appreciate it greatly.
thanks RB

There is a sensor on the rear end, pull it out and check it out. If that is your problem, you may be able to clean it with a dry rag, or may need to replace it and the wiring like mentioned.

How would I check it out ? Can it be tested with a meter or just a visual?
thanks RB

I don't know how to test it with a meter, just pull it out and have a look.

The sensor on the rear end is actually called RABS if you go to get a new one.

Ok thanks, what does RABS stand for? Does it have anything to do with the ABS brakes? My ABS light has been coming on sometimes on the dash and I was thinking that it might be a loose wire or connector.
thanks RB

RABS stands for rear antilock brake system. And yes it will cause both your trans issue and your ABS light.
