F250 Rear Axle Seal Replacement - Is it a DIY Job?
#17
Old thread I know, but I was doing this for the first time last weekend. When I pulled the hub, the slinger fell off and I had no idea of it's orientation during new seal install. Also the old seal half of it stayed on the spindle. So, after getting that off and putting the new seal on, I realized I really had no idea as to how to orientate the oil slinger. None of these threads seem to mention it during install, but I was on my cell and away from a computer, so put it on as I thought it should go. Lucky me, I was WRONG!! Tore that seal to hell. Now that I'm on a computer and better searching forums, I found this from Diesel Dave that does show orientation of the Slinger during install. Please pay attention to this very important step and you won't be like me and having to do a seal job twice. But on the bright side, like someone else here mentioned, I can now do a hub seal in 30 minutes or less.

How important is the Oil slinger thingy? I just had to replace a bearing(outter) and mine doesn't have the oil slinger thingy. I replace the seal after checking the inner bearing. The Pass side of my truck did not have the Oil slinger between the bearing and seal. So is it really require? Where would I get one if it is? TIA,
Edit,
I have a F350 Dually, just noticed the thread is for the F250, but not sure if they are the same. I am hoping I won't have to worry about it.

the name " oil slinger" gives away the function so no question what it does
but many years had the same setup with no slinger and I don't hear of oil starvation issues
the slinger was solely responsible for my bearings being wiped out
it was hard to reinstall that 5$ part in my case since it wiped out 100's of dollars worth of parts

I have this job in to do list. Anyone happen to recall how much time the job took?
I get the extra fun of doing the parking brake backing plates too.
Thanks for the good links.

Not a lot left after the rust had it's way. And yes I do have that
socket and the step plate if I have to use a puller to get the hub off.

Close but not quite so bad. Are both sides the same on your?
Mine dropped the passenger side shoes and they started to
rub on the drum so they got removed as a quick fix.
