So if i was to rebuild the 93 with the comp cam 31-255-5 and gt40 heads and find some headers for it. That would probably be a nice little upgrade from a stock 302?

Has anyone had any personal experience with the comp cam 31-255-5?

What else needs to be replaced when changing a cam?

Cam and lifters usually come as a set. I know thwy do for flat tappet motors. I am not sure for roller though. I would replace them anyways. I'd also get a new timing chain for it. Other than that, just a gasket set and your time.

EDIT: i havent seen anyone mention gears on this thread yet. The 302 likes to rev (we all know this). If you have 3.55 gears or worse, 3.08's then that motor is definatly going to feel like it drags. Swap in 4.10's and a good limited slip and it'll feel like a whole nother truck. Hell if you did a gear swap and built that 93 motor all at the same time, you'll s*** yourself the first time you drive it.

How do I go about a gear swap? What's all involved? Where do I get this from? And about how much does this cost to do roughly?

First off, post your axle code off the door jam so we can see what gears you have in the rear end

If you rebuild the '93 motor use the Comp cams 35-512-8, no need for new lifters with this roller cam but do install a new timing set.

If you use the '86 motor put the 35-255-5 cam in it.

The comp cam 35-512-8 will work without the maf sensor? People were suggesting the 31-255-5 for this? What's the difference? What ones better?

Yes, this cam is for a roller motor

This cam is for a flat tappet motor,

Just FYI that flat tappet motor needs a cast gear on the distributor and the 93 needs a steel gear.

A gear swap can cost $1000 dollars or more per axle. 4.10s and a limited slip would do wonders for you though. I probably wouldnt swap gears unless you have anything bigger than 31" tires and overdrive trans.

Well I currently have 31" tires. May go bigger maybe a 33" if i'm going to put the money into it to rebuild this motor but i'm not sure about the gear swap if its going to cost that much. Maybe i can find a used rear end somewhere for cheaper if i look around.

I'm kind of keeping my options open at this point. Say if i didnt go with the route of rebuilding the 93 and just decided to throw the comp cam 31-255-5 in the 86 since its running and in the truck right now. What would I all have to do for that? Just simple swap out the cams or what other parts would I have to replace also?

I'm just trying to figure out all my options and what way i want to go with this because at the moment i'm not sure which way i'm headed. Just trying to get my information around so i can make a decision. I appricaite all your help.

Doing it in the truck? If so, take out the radiator and fan/shroud, take off the plenum, lower intake, loosen rocker arms, move the push rods out of the way, remove the lifters. Then, take off the water pump, timing chain cover, timing chain and holder. After all that, take off the cam plate and slide out the cam. Lube up the new one and reinstallation is thereverse of the above.

The lifters in my 89 were hard as HE!! to get out. I would never do a lifter job in the truck again. I cant imagine doing a cam swap. But people have done it. It is just LOADs easier to do it with the motor out of the truck. Only takes me about 4 hrs now a days and will be more prepared to remove broken bolts that more than likely WILL happen. Either water pump bolts, lower intake or timing chain cover. Thats where the majority of them do snap off.

Things to replace:
Timing chain
cam/lifters (should come as a set for the 86)
possibly water pump while your in there.
all gaskets

Old thread I know. I lost internet for awhile due to moving and a bunch of issues. but now i'm back onto this project. So using the 93 motor doing a rebuild with the Comp cams 35-512-8, try to find some gt40 heads or are there any other new heads that are fairly cheap that will work well? As far as headers should i stay away from shorties or long tube? I know a buddy of mine said dont get long tubes because he couldnt get to his starter without removing the header. suggestions on the headers? Again i will be using the EFI and still will have the o2 sensor.

Also i found the came on summit but how do i know what lifters to get for it?

Getting to the starter is a non issue unless you're driving a Dodge.

You don't need new lifters with the Comp 35-512-8 in the '93 motor.

Its a tight fit on my 89 with long tubes and the big boat anchor starter, but I can change it without taking the header off. But I have flowtechs and the fit is junk. I agree with conanski, use the pacesetter long tubes, best fit and has the egr port.

Found out the other motor is a 85, so I have a 85 and 86 motor. So I guess it doesn't matter what motor ibrebuild. What kind of cost would I be looking at if I was aiming for 350-400hp?
