changing brake shoes 98 f-800
How do you get the shoes off?I've never done brakes on an air brake vehicle before,I just cant figure out how the heck they come off.The truck has automatic slack adjusters,do i have to manually back them off all the way until the shoes dont have pressure on them?I have 2 pics but i dont know how to post them here.

Yes, you need to pull the cam back around, but you do it with a special bolt that hooks into the air chamber to pull the brakes off, not by adjusting the slack. The bolt comes with every new chamber, so you could probably go to any medium-heavy duty truck shop and get a few. I probably still have some around, even though I haven't touched an air brake in over 15 years...

fellro86 pretty much said it all...
I will add that the FIRST step is to get a service manual BEFORE you touch the brakes. Thats a lot of truck and load with lots of potential injury to others to just casualy mess around with a vital safety system.
If you are using the truck commercialy, you have to be certified in air brake repair to work on air brakes.
Good luck with your project - David!

This is assuming you have drum S-cam brakes
Also assuming you have some mechanical and saftey knowledge
Once you get the brakes released and adjuster backed off,pry the brakes shoe back on the S-cam end and pull the rollers out.You will haveto release the wire retainer for the roller on each shoe
remove theshoe retainer and the shoes will pretty much fall off
Reverse proceedure to install
I always install new springs,S-cam bushings and rollers with every brake job
The S-cam bushings are inside the tube the S-cam goes through one on the brake side and one on adjuster side.
The rollers and bushings can be bought in a kit
Check S-cams for wear they may also need to be replaced
If the air system is in good shape you don't need to pull the spring brake back with the puller bolt, just maintain proper air pressure to it at all times
Download service manuals. This is for Eaton brakes
