95 F-150 ??? Oil pump & pan removal.
I am trying to help out my brother ( who is a dedicated ford nut) but with no mechanical knowledge. He has a 95' f-150 with a 302 V8 with 185,000 miles on it. The problem is that he has no oil pressure I don't know the cause). Can I remove the pan with the engine in place??? It does knock so it is not the sender. How reliable are the pumps in these trucks? Could the relief vale be stuck open? I have hopes ( but doubts) that it is the pump. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The short answer is "NO". If you're not a wrenchhead, you'll lose more blood, sweat, & tears trying to do it with the engine in than just pulling the engine. I'm a wrenchhead and I've done it, and if I ever have to do one again, I'm gonna pull the engine.
Get a Haynes manual, but this site also has some useful info:

Hi Steve thanks for the reply. I am a little bit of a wrench head. I just have no experience with fords. ( I have all GM's). I was just wondering if it is possible to get that pan out without pulling the engine. I was thinking I could lift the front up a little to get the pan to clear the cross member. If I pull it I will probably replace it. It has 185000 or so. I was even hoping by chance I could turn the crank and work the pan out with the engine in place.

You CAN do it that way, but you have to drop the pan onto the crossmember & then pull the pump pickup & pump BEFORE you can remove the pan. And that's not even the hardest part! Wait till you try to find the oil pump in the pan & reinstall it by reaching into the pan, WITHOUT dropping the pump shaft into the pan!
Like I said; No.

Yes, it can be done, but it isn't pretty. I've done my 87 302, and my 95 351. Both suck. Gotta get the exhaust out of the way, disconnect the engine mounts from the frame, and disconnect the rear trans mount, and use a jack under the trans. ALso, be careful of the Thermactor aspirator tube. Then drop the pan onto the crossmember. THEN disconnect the pump and pickup tube and drop them into the pan. With some phenagling, the pan will slide out the rear. Put the pump and pickup tube assy. into the pan, and put the pan on the crossmember. HINT: to help hold the pump driveshaft (replace it), put a dab of grease on the top of the shaft. THis will hold the driveshaft in place and make putting the new oil pump on much easier.
You know what though, I think with 185k you're ready for a rebuild anyways. If this wasn't so involved, then remove just the pan.

I think I am going to pull it. I am sure it will be a pain, but at least it will be easier to work on once it is out. Then I can pull off the main and rod caps to see how they look. If none are spun I will just put in new bearings and oil pump. If any did spin. Then I will get a long block ($1,600). Thanks! i still wish i could find a how-to site for this. he has a chiltons manual, but it covers all trucks 93-97. so it doesn't go into much detail.
