The NBS PSD's have a very similar turbo, Bigger? Slightly.

TP38 is the OBS turbo, and the GTP38 is the NBS turbo.

Different AR on the parts, but the inducer wheel is the same size, so in that sense, no its not a bigger turbo.

Does it have a waste gate on it? thats an easy way to tell if its an SD turbo along with the garret markings on the intake.

If its a van turbo, it won't have a gate.
The A/R ratios are the same on the compressor side, but the late SD turbo is physically larger. The turbine A/R is different on the SD turbo because its a gated turbo.
Is the collector a V-band or a flange? The stock turbo on our trucks uses a T4 flange. The SD's use a V-band.

Can you post a picture of your turbo??? the SD turbo has a larger compressor housing and smaller turbine housing. Do they perform better?? IMO, no they don't. The compressor wheels are the same size, but the OBS wheel is the better wheel design b/c the SD wheel surges. Even the van turbos seem to have a tendancy to surge sometimes.

The SD wheel moves more air than the OBS wheel, which is why it ends up surging. The only thing an SD turbo has over an OBS turbo is spool time. My E99 truck (especially after it was tuned) could get the turbo lit pretty fast. My 96 with basically the same motor as my E99 is a laggy pig.

but your '96 has way smaller injectors and no tuning. Put some tuning and some stage 1's on there and you will be very surprised at how quick that 1.15 housing can spool

My 96 is a Cali so it has AB's just like my SD did. And I'm not counting the tuner when I'm talking about spool time That little wastegated turbine housing on the SD spins up pretty quick, even with just AB's pushing it.

Ill attest to the quick spool of the stage 1 OBS. Spools instantly to be honest!!!!

Great setup...I kind of miss it

I wouldn't say that it spools instantly... Stage I's with the stock turbo is still a bit laggy.

Mine used to spool almost instantly, but now it takes a few seconds for it to spool and when it spools it spools slowly up to full boost instead of going straight from 8psi up to 30+ in less than 1/2 a second it now takes a few seconds to finally get up to 25psi. LOL. Worn out turbo, boost leaks... Gotta love it.
