it sounds to me like a loose connection to the transfer case... on my old bronco this could happen if it was cold. I know the system is much different on this truck, but there is still something that sends the "shift" signal to the transfer case. without having time to do research, I'd recommend getting under there and looking for loose wires or vacuum hoses. might be hard to do if the skids are in the way... but worth a shot
i'd also try shutting off with the selector in 4L, then back on. switch to 4H and see what happens... I'm sure you've tried everything but just throwing out ideas

if you select 4x4 LOW after being in 4x4 HIGH from your ESOF selector, you have to put your transmission in Neutral and turn switch back to HIGH or OFF. I had this happen to me and I couldn't get out of LOW either. You can shift into 4x4 High anytime(shift on fly), but do so at low speed or not moving. 4x4 LOW should be selected in N and turned off in N to not damage trans or transfer case
from another thread dont know if it will help

the gauge in the info center will show you transmission temp, not transfer case
limping it to town... I dunno. straight road in 4L should be okay for short distances. I'd do as much of it offroad as possible to avoid damage to your tires and hubs. I might go as much as 20 miles, but SLOWLY and CAREFULLY =\
