Manual to Automatic Transmission Conversion

Anyone convert a Manual 5 speed 4.9 L (91 F150 Lariat) to an Automatic Tranny?

I know it not as simple as bolting on a AT onto the existing 4.9L without a workaround or conversion kit...

Any hints or words of widsom welcome!

I've never done one, but some things to consider would be, are you going to install an automatic steering column, or use an aftermarket floor shifter, your radiator won't have cooler line provisions, but you could run lines to an external trans cooler, I don't know if the driveshaft length & yoke would work, may need one from an auto truck.

You'll also need to bypass the clutch safety switch, (simple), and decide if you want to change out the pedals, or leave the clutch pedal under there. Make sure you use the correct flexplate(flywheel) for your 4.9, & I think the starter is different for auto trans.

Finding an auto column would be a lot nicer, IMO, because the floor shifter gets in the way if you ever need to squeeze 3 people in there, plus you get the park lock and starter interlock.

Thanks for the advise! I'll take it all into consideration. Those are some areas that completely skipped my mind.

Another thing to check I forgot, you may need to take the pilot bushing out of the crankshaft so the torque converter snout will fit in there.
