Gas Guage Problems

Twice now in the last 2 years and in the last 15k my gas gauge showed about 1/8 of a tank and approx. 65 miles on the lie-o-meter and truck ran out of fuel. Of course always happens at the worst times and places. Does anyone know of a common problem. May pull the tank and look at the sending unit in hopes to see something obvious hanging it up but thought I'd check here before getting carried away.

I have had the same problem. Mine hung up at a little more than a quarter of a tank. Ater that one time of running out of fuel I started wacthing my Trip Meter more closely and filling up sooner. After having the gauge stick at the same place 3 times I special ordered a new one (300.00 +) from an on-line Ford Dealer. Within two days the gauge started back working correctly. I did a "Hutch Mod" to the new one and Installed it anyway. In looking over the sender I removed I didn't see any obvious cause, it may have a small piece of dirt temporally stuck on the potenometer. Also you can test the Dash Gauge by introducing a know resistor load the gauge I forget the values of the test resistors but they are in the Ford Service Manuals.
