hi guys,
i want to upgrade my 460 78 bronco to an automatic overdrive (AOD). I have heard that they're was no AOD built for a 460 or BB. But, i have heard the opposite too. Also, a little bird told me to look for an AOD that came off a big diesel and that that would bolt upto a 460. Let me know what you know. Or, am i just going to have to buy or make one of thoes adapter plates.

 

Read this tech article, Complete Overdrive Conversion for '78-'79 Ford Bronco . It tells you everything you need to know to do this conversion. The only thing stopping me from doing it now is the cost.

 

yeah, i read that article. that was what got my interestes sparked on the overdrive. i knew about the e4od but was no hot about the computer ****. thats half the reason i bought my truck(no BS, just truck). i also heard the e40d was an very weak trany. The article is in fact, just one article. i was told that there was an AOD for big blocks and big deisels. is this true? or were they only made for small blocks???

 

No aod was made for big blocks or diesels

 

OK..I thought I read here in this forum that a transmission from a 400 would also fit behind a 460. So I guess the new question is..Is there a AOD for the 400?

 

Huggy Bear thre was no AOD avalible for the 400/351m engines.

what you are looking for is referred to as the e4od and has since been revised and renamed again. The e4od is basically a c6 with an electronic valve body and overdrive. There are a couple of people who make a standalone computer to run it at around $400 . The transmission will cost you about $750 on up. They can be found behind fuel injected 460 but the diesel is a slightly different . I think the dowel holes etc.. are just a little bigger. The latest version of this transmission is in the lightning trucks. I plan on doing this swap behind a 7.3 diesel in my truck eventually. There is someone on this site that did this swap but it may be in the 1980 and up forum. Check it out.

I want to do the E4OD swap as well. The controller is from Baumman (Electronic Performance Products -- Baumann Electronic Controls, LLC) and costs $425. They also have some aftermarket parts to increase the transmission's power. It seems like a good setup; a C6 tranny can take plenty of power, and that's what the E4 is based on. It also sounds like it gets better mileage than the AOD for less hassle and money.

 

there are lots of adapter kits to mount the AOD behind the 429/460 engines. the only problem is a stock AOD would probably not last behind a healthy 460 for very long. you will also need the throttle body linkage kit to make it work properly and make sure you have it hooked up correctly or the tranny will not last long.

someone once told me that the overdrive behind the diesel although they look the same are different. the bellhousings were suppose to be slightly different (i think the starter location was the main difference) and the gearing inside was totaly different. i am not 100% sure on this info, just what i was told by someone else.

nice thing about getting the E4OD and a stand alone controller is that you can change the shift points and shift firmness as easily as punching in new parameters. can have nice soft shift points for the hi way and then raise them for racing or off-roading easily.

another option is a gear vendors.. keep whatever trans you want and put a gear vendors behind it. AOD's dont last behind 351's. i wouldnt trust them behind a 460. E40D/4R100 are quite a bit bigger and stronger than AOD's

 

Gear Vendor = approx $3000

AOD, built to take more power = $2000, + adaptor @ $795 for $2795 + additional parts like linkage, cross member etc.

E4OD = $2484 + controller $425 for $2909, + additional parts etc.

E4OD = $300 Junked + $1400 Built to Tow rebuild at a shop + Controller for $425 = $2125
AOD = $300 Junked + $1200 Built to Tow rebuild at Shop + Adapter for $795 = $2295

Rough guesses of course. You'll also be swapping out the steering column.

@metalmilitia: I see a lot of people that claim the E4OD is a weak tranny, but I see plenty that say it's strong.

In my opinion, if the AOD was tough enough to go behind a 460, Ford would have offered it. They didn't, they offered the E4OD stock, which means to me it's tough enough to handle that engine.

 

Them's better numbers.

I don't know much, just what I see here and I would go E4OD and NOT put an AOD behind anything other than a smaller motor in a lighter vehicle.

Conanski (IIRC) has one in a truck with a 351 & it's lived a long life. It can be done, but the E4OD seems like the man for the job here.

 

Brent, I have a Baumannator TCS that was used for 6 months in my 91 class C motorhome. I saved it to install in my F53 motorhome, but never did. I suspect it's worth $150.00+freight if you or any one else wants it. It's complete with wiring harness & software.
