well, I may not be a genius...

But I think I figured out why I'm not getting any spark:

Oil slinger = slang

Lower gear = GONE

Thar she blows!

After a little magnet fishing:

Off to Napa.

Dang, I've seen loose chains, but never a broken gear.

Wow! Bet that took a couple double-takes when you first pulled the timing cover!

Yep, that would be the reason alright, I have never seen that happen to a gear, you'll need to keep the pic's and pieces cause there's alot who won't belive it till they see it. The good part is the parts are cheap and the job is pretty easy compared to today's engines.

Did you try to turn the crank and cam to see if there was a reason for this? Awesome though!!!

Ouch! I would seriously consider dropping the pan and cleaning it out. No way you got all the metal fragments out of there.

Consider a magnetic Drain Plug at the lest. Yes when the chain brakes it can jam the gear and something must give. If your lucky it is just the gear but can take off the end of the crank or believe it or not bend them.

MikeOoOoOo suggested the same thing. His hunch, which my gut tells me is probably right, is that there is an issue with the cam. That it stopped spinning and that's why th lower gear and chain broke.

Going to to check now.

Guys ya my be on to something but I have seen the chain so worn that with a back fire the chain has got caught on the lower gear and done just this. I agree before going to Napa try and turn the cam and make sure it is free. As well as the crank. And if ya got a dial mic put it on them an see if they are bent. It does happen.

Well, the cam wouldn't budge. he crank was spinning free so I'm focusing on the obvious for now.

I'm not happy about another tear down, but on the positive side I got the engine out (staring by taking off the hood) completely alone in 2 hours and 3 minutes.

Here's where I'm at for the night:

Before I pulled the motor I would of popped the valve covers off and loosened up the rocker arms to make it a little easier to try to turn the cam. You may have just pulled that motor for no reason. A cam swap is pretty simple to do with the motor in the truck.

I agree, you won't be able to budge the cam with all the valvetrain tension.
