That's a 1978 and later P/S pump (all-except Econolines), since it has a plastic reservoir.

Bill, thanks for your help on this thread (and the other ones too). Looks like I need to start chasing the correct brackets and bolts. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to find parts off a ford maverick or pinto on this thing. The previous owner must be laughing.

Looks like they are using the wrong hole somehow. 1st pic is actually an 85, add on air, second is the 78 with factory air. The air bracket is the spacer.

I'm wondering if they used a 302 bracket from the original motor. I think this, because the long bolt that goes through the aluminum body then connects to and goes through the blue rectangle block that is sitting against the head, and then protrudes through and is about 1/32" from the freeze plug on the head. Obviously it isn't the correct location, so I'm thinking that the black steel bracket is the wrong one. Does anyone have a close-up of this bracket on a 351w, from a similar angle that I photographed from?

I might be able to do one better, I have a 71 302, then have the 351w's, I'll try to get a look tomorrow. That would make sense, since the deck height is different.

that's exactly what crossed my mind today as I was staring at it. I figure with a 302, it would hit the top right bolt hole in the head, but due to the taller deck height on the 351, it would hit the freeze plug.

I didn't have a bracket on the 302, must have been a manual steering truck. It sure looks like it would be positioned different.

Sometimes Ford used one style of bracket but turned it for a different mounting position.
I presume that's why all the different threaded holes in the engine parts ie: alternator brackets

Good design or bad design ?

what I see from the photos is the power steering pump pulley is too far forward ,more than likely because it is FORD pump and not a saginaw pump.

The saginaw pump is closer fit to the head.

also, there are several different length spacers used on these engines which could be a problem

My suggestion is to get yourself a saginaw pump and make up the P/S used on E-series vans since that is what 351W's were put in.

it looks like the set up you have is definatly from a 302. the metal block in the back would have been made to compensate for the additional deck height as stated above. The alternator bracket has an aluminum peice that bolts to the head that is drilled and tapped to compensate for this differance, but the other side does not. I ran into this same problem on one of the trucks i'm working on. From what I can tell, you can use the bracket from a 351m but you have to change the aluminum bracket on the pump itself also. that is what i am planning to do. Let me know if it doesn't work, lol.

Looks like I have black steel front plate bracket 3C511 from the 3rd diagram, while I have the pump from the second diagram, and an aluminum middle mounting bracket 3C511 from the second picture that bolts to the pump. The blue square stock bracket is a manufactured piece that I've seen several vendors selling, which allows people to use their 289/302 pumps and brackets on 351w motors. The top hole though is missing the bolt that goes into the head. It looks like everything would work, with the except that the middle aluminum bracket that the pump bolts to needs about 1/2" removed on the back of the bracket where it meets that blue square stock. This would then allow the aluminum bracket to slide back, thus aligning the pulleys correctly. I thought about trying to see if there was a 2-groove waterpump pulley, but the alternator belt rides on the second groove of the crank pulley, so that's out. Looks like the only option is to change or modify the PS aluminum bracket to shift it back, and use a small spacer between the black steel front bracket and the middle aluminum bracket. Does that sound correct?
