Torn Oil cooler screen (w/pics)
Okay guys, since i found a torn ipr screen I decided to check the screen below the oil cooler. Under warranty dealer did an egr, oil cooler, headgaskets. I could tell which ever tech did the job was in a hurry. There was a lot of debree in the engine valley so I know they didn't clean it very well. He also left one of my intake manifolds bolt completely lose as well as one of the bolts that holds the oil filter base. I don't think they vibrated lose. They also supposedly cleaned the turbo do the low boost complaint I had but failed to check the turbo for excessive wear. When I took the turbo out I could move the compressor wheel about a 1/16 of an inch easily and the wheel almost touched the housing. Also the Unison ring has a deep wear spot where the cam rests. Now this.....where the hell did all that debri come from? Any ideas?
I cleaned the engine valley with de-greaser and a tooth brush before I took the oil cooler out.

When I went to install my bulletproof setup mine had a torn sump screen too, and I had some of those white styrofoam looking pellets too (in the second screen pic). IPR screen wasn't torn, but did have some debris, which I carefully cleaned. Interesting thing is that the oil cooler was replaced when we did headgaskets about 30K miles ago and since the screen wasn't torn we just cleaned and replaced it. No more screen to clean or replace with the bulletproof setup.

Thanks guys for the response. I feel better about what your collective experience. That stuff does look like filter debrie know that you mention it. I am going to clean everything back up and put it back together. Did the stc now to tackle the stand pipes and dumy plugs. When I did the stc I dropped one of the screws into the engine and dropped a brick in my shorts. Ran down to buy a telescopic magnet an was able to fish it out. Whew!

I'm no turbo expert but you did mention you had some play in the shaft and the wheel almost touches the housing. My stock turbo had that same amount of play and a little more. Scored the housing some. I went ahead and got a Garrett powermax for the replacement and it to has some play in the shaft. Gets real close to the housing but doesn't touch. So I think your okay on that part of your turbo as long as it doesn't touch an part of the wall.
Like I said though I'm no expert but I was just giving you peace of mind that my new turbo does the same thing.

Just a guess but probably has play so it finds a dynamic balance at high rotational speed. Ever check the fan blades on a jet engine, they are "loose" to the point where an engine rotates in a light breeze you can hear them go clack clack. Again this so they can find there balance at high speed.

I know I can count on bismic to give us exactly the information we need. It looked and felt closer to 1mm of radial play which I assume is being able to push the compressor wheel close to the housing. Also lately when I shut down the truck I could the turbo making a slight rattling like noise as it spun down. If the sound changes once i have rebuilt the turbo I will post it. I will also give you a comparison of end play after the rebuilt to state any subjective differences I might feel.
