Wild Ride

While there are countless cookie-cutter builds out there in the world, every so often, we come across something truly unique and very different. That's precisely the case with this 1934 Ford pickup owned and built by Jessie Jewart from Texas, a "NASROD" type of machine that Top Gear recently got the chance to check out up close - and take a pretty wild ride in, to boot.

Rat Rod That Moves

NASROD essentially stands for NASCAR-inspired rat rod, which is pretty accurate when we take a closer look at this monstrous creation. After all, it is powered by a 500 cubic-inch LS-based V8 built by Steve Morris, which is mated to a T56 transmission and a real four-wheel drive system with the front differential from a diesel-powered pickup.

Melting Pot of Parts

A true melting pot of sorts, all of that kit is joined by things like a Ford 9-inch rear end, suspension bits and pieces from various Corvettes, the transfer case from a mud truck, and even a steering rack out of a desert-racing trophy truck. Plus, its wicked mill churns out 1,000 horsepower with no power adders, albeit with methanol in the tank, anyway.

Snapping Axles

The vintage Blue Oval hauler has so much power on tap, in fact, that it has made a nasty habit of snapping axles like twigs, apparently, and it even requires a swap in this particular segment. Regardless, once that's complete, our host dons a pair of earbuds and hops in to take what might be the ride of his life.

Endless Power

Our host quickly admits that he's never been in a naturally aspirated vehicle of any kind that makes this kind of power, and he's simply finding himself waiting for a turbo to kick in. However, that obviously doesn't happen, and instead, the car just keeps pulling, making its way through the RPM range so quickly that it's quite mind-boggling to witness in action.

Tire Slayer

Regardless, this rat rod does one thing very, very well, and it isn't just accelerating at a rapid pace - it's also one heck of a burnout machine. The '34 Ford certainly isn't practical to drive on public roads either, its suspension punishing occupants and its insanely loud engine deafening anyone nearby, but it certainly can pulverize a set of tires in no time.

Stress Reducer

Thus, that's precisely what its owner is keen to do and needless to say, the duo put on one heck of a show for us in this clip - at least until they break a pinion gear. While the fact that it loves to break parts is another worry for many, to us, this NASROD is the perfect shop toy - a fun, wickedly powerful machine that makes the stress of a long day at work melt away instantly, with one simple stab at the throttle.
