With each passing generation, vehicles of all kinds get more powerful and quicker. This leads to a funny phenomenon - even something like a basic work truck is capable of outrunning an older purpose-built performance machine. The Fast Lane Truck found this out recently when it tested its new 2021 Ford F-150 XL that's equipped with the brand new 3.5-liter PowerBoost hybrid.
Electrified Pickup
The PowerBoost combines Ford's tried-and-true 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with an electric motor that's built into the 10-speed automatic transmission, and it's capable of running on electric power alone for a short time at certain speeds. It also helps boost output to an impressive 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque.
Hyper Efficient
In addition to this impressive output, the PowerBoost also touts excellent fuel economy ratings of 24 miles-per-gallon city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. In a mixed city and highway driving, TFLT averaged 22.5 mpg on 91 octane gas, which is pretty impressive for a SuperCrew, four-wheel-drive pickup.
And It's Quick
While the PowerBoost is a pricey option at $4,495 over the base 3.3-liter V6, it offers quite a lot in terms of power, efficiency, towing and payload capacity, and of course, performance. TFLT managed to coax the pickup from 0-60 in just 5.61 seconds, and that's one mile above sea level.
Mighty Quick
That time is quicker than any other Ford F-150 TFLT has ever tested in Colorado, including the venerable Ford F-150 Raptor or F-150 equipped with the Power Stroke diesel, EcoBoost, Coyote, you name it. That number was achieved with the truck in sport mode and four high with AdvanceTrac and traction control off.

These results are no doubt impressive and prove that Ford has achieved yet another milestone with its latest F-150. The PowerBoost is a no-compromise powerplant in every measurable way, with incredible power, excellent efficiency, and amazing performance, even in base "work truck" form.
