Finding a Gem

Picking up someone else's finished project can be a bit tricky. You won't always know what went into a build or if corners were cut. Thanks to the internet, things are a little bit easier now. And, if you have your heart set on a beautiful Ford F1, we have a truck you might be interested in. Follow along as we see what sets this F1 apart from other classics.

Brand Purists Look Away

If you are someone who is fiercely loyal to either Ford or Chevy, to the point they won't get in a vehicle made by the opposite manufacturer, you should your head or look away. In the engine bay, you'll find the heart of this Ford F1 is actually a GM Corvette LT1 V8. Backing up the fuel-injected V8 is a 4-speed automatic 4L60E with overdrive. To give the LT1 a little more oomph, a Street and Performance ECM with a reprogrammed chip was installed.

Nipped and Tucked

From the front, the F1 is both rounded and svelte. The front bumper was removed, a section was cut from the middle, and it was welded back together after being smoothed over. The cab also had a little cut off the top as the cab was chopped by 2.5 inches and lengthened by 4 inches. As a result, this almost 70-year-old truck looks both antique and futuristic.

A Stance All Its Own

The chopped roofline of the cab and the meaty rear tires give this truck a classic "stink bug" type stance. What you might not immediately notice is to help achieve these proportions the F1's bed was shortened. Staggered tire fitment also helps and gives the F1 the illusion it's moving even when standing still. Tucked beneath the fiberglass bed cover is a real oak bed floor.

Modern Suspension on a Classic

Thanks to some great under-body shots, we can see no corners were cut on the suspension. Looking from the back to the front, you'll notice a four-link rear suspension setup with coilover shocks. In the front a reinforced sway bar keeps the nose in check and gives the F1 compliant handling. In the name of safety and reliability, four-wheel disc brakes were installed to bring this pickup to a halt.

Redone But Not Overdone

Inside you'll notice the F1 features a 40/20/40 split cloth bench seat. The cloth seats looks both comfortable and supportive and it's nice knowing the armrest center console is there for long rides. Tucked away in an overhead console are the stereo and door controls along with a digital gear indicator. A nice custom touch on the painted dash are the pinstripes which lead right to the tried and true Ford blue oval.

Driver Friendly

From the driver's side, you'll notice the simple and elegant steering wheel which features an old-school V8 logo. To prevent holding the steering wheel at an uncomfortable angle, an Ididit tilt steering wheel was installed. Past the steering wheel, you'll notice the gauges are easy to read thanks to the grey faces and white font. What makes this F1 even more of a gem is the inclusion of air conditioning. Peek towards the lower part of the dash and you can see the air vents subtly incorporated.

Like What You're Seeing?

If you are, the good news is this truck is currently for sale over at Streetside Classics in Phoenix, AZ. The F1 is minty fresh with only 1,300 miles on the odometer since being built. What's even better is they have a full list of records from the build as well as the photos taken along the way. If you've been looking for a well-done F1, it'd be hard to pass this one up.
