Say what?!

Much has been made about what the return of the midsize will bring and what kind of performance will it be capable of. With the date of the Ranger getting closer by the date more and more information trickles out from Ford to the masses but forgive us Blue Oval overlords for getting a little antsy on this one. Without any further ado let's get into this thing.

Getting to the numbers

The 2019 Ranger will return to the American marketplace with just one engine and transmission option as of now. That powerplant will be a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The max payload capacity will be 1,840 pounds for the 2WD extended cab. The max towing capacity will be 7,500 pounds. Gross vehicle weight rating will be 6,050 pounds. The gross combined weight rating will be 12,500 pounds.

Numbers don't lie

The Ford Vehicle Guide lists payload capacities for 2WD and 4x4 models and different cab configuration with the 4x4 trucks starting with a payload of 1,500 pounds. But what about the competition? Well, the Toyota Tacoma has a max payload of 1,620 pounds and a max towing weight of 6,800 lbs.

The Chevy Colorado has a max payload of 1,566 pounds and a max towing weight of 7,000 pounds for the gas models and 7,700 pounds for the turbo diesel models.

The Nissan Frontier is rated at a max payload of 1,460 pounds and a max towing weight of 6,710 pounds.

Going off of what the guide is stating, the gas-powered ranger will be the segment leader for payload and towing rates.

Possible power

Ranger fans have been chomping at the bit to get a new version of the truck since it left dealerships seven years ago. The truck will be based on the global Ranger platform that is sold all around the world with the North American version getting unique style changes and powertrain options.

The power numbers we can expect from the EcoBoost Ranger will be around 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. We're sure that since the truck will be the leading vehicle in the payload towing categories that it will also be more powerful than the Tacoma and Colorado-GMC Canyon.

Trim level features

As for what else you can expect out on the road with the Ranger XL, it will include safety tech such as automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. The Ranger XLT will include a lane departure warning system, lane keeping assist, reverse sensing system, and blind spot monitoring that will cover a towed trailer to warn the driver of other vehicles up to 35 feet behind the truck.
