More Power

It came as a surprise to exactly no one that the Ford Maverick launched to much fanfare, immediately creating a backlog of orders that have yet to be filled, more than a year after its arrival. Those that have taken delivery of a Maverick are quickly finding out that it surprisingly makes for a pretty decent autocross and drag racing machine as well, interestingly enough. And that's precisely the motivation behind this particular build from a fellow named John in the Maverick Truck Club forums.

Going Big

After essentially pushing his stock EcoBoost-powered Maverick to its limits, John decided to install a larger turbocharger on the 2.0-liter powerplant recently. Instead of nabbing some aftermarket unit, however, he stayed OEM with the turbo from a Lincoln Corsair, which is larger yet features housings that are similar to the Maverick's stock turbo.

Straight Bolt-On

As John pointed out, this swap is not for the faint of heart, however. The job still took quite a bit of work to complete, and as he points out, all-wheel drive pickups pose a bigger problem, as the transfer case makes gaining access to the mounting bolts rather difficult. Regardless, the Corsair turbo bolts right up with no further modifications needed.

Power Gains

The benefits of such a swap are undeniable, however - for around $350, John picked up a turbo that peaks around 330 wheel horsepower, versus 270 for the Maverick. Those that want more can ship the unit to an aftermarket outfit like CRP Engineering in Canada, which modifies them to over 425 wheel horsepower, too.

Getting Faster

Prior to this upgrade, John's Maverick ran a 4.37-second 0-60 and 12.72-second quarter-mile with a tune on E30. On cheap 87-octane gas, the new setup pulled a 13.46-second quarter-mile, followed by a 13.29 - and that's without a proper tune.

Thriving Movement

As of now, we're still waiting to see the full potential of this turbo upgrade, but the early results certainly look promising. Above all, however, it's encouraging to see that the hot rod movement isn't dead and that it continues to thrive, even with unconventional vehicles like the Maverick.
