Do It All Rig

These days, trucks are considered do-it-all types of vehicles that are capable of moving families around in comfort and towing or hauling heavy loads when needed. But if that isn't enough versatility, there are also a handful of companies out there transforming trucks like Ford's Super Duty into fully functioning overlanding rigs like this F-550 that we spotted over at Expedition Portal.

Home Built

The owner of this awesome machine, simply referred to as Scott, designed the living quarters of his rig himself and even and molded the composite cabin. The roof, like many similar builds these days, extends upward to provide plenty of headroom for anyone who isn't a center on a professional basketball team.

Design Challenges

"We started off on this journey with the goal of creating a smaller, more capable, and higher performing EarthRoamer," Scott said. "We'd been in one before and liked many aspects of it, but we felt like it was much too big for true off-grid exploration. My wife refuses to camp within five miles of anyone, so we wanted something that was really comfortable but small enough to get to the out-of-the-way spots we love to visit. We also needed something that would fit me (I'm 6'6"), the family, and two enormous dogs. So, we had some design challenges right from the start."

Solar Power

As they would be camping out in the middle of nowhere, the setup needed to be reliable as well. As such, all of the major systems on the truck are powered by solar energy, with a backup for everything. And there is a lot to power, including air conditioning and heating units, a gas furnace, two induction cooktops, and a water heater, to name a few.

Plenty of Storage

The truck also holds a lithium battery setup consisting of 800 ah of Victron's and an auxiliary alternator and voltage regulator that allows the truck's engine to act as a generator. To ensure camping trips can last a while, the truck also holds 100 gallons of fresh water and 40 gallons of gray water, enough to last two to three weeks, as well as 70 gallons of fuel.

Small but Packed

Despite being smaller than many similar overlanding rigs, Scott and his wife aren't lacking for amenities inside. There's a nearly king size bed, another kid-sized bed, and an articulating front wall to soak in all those beautiful views. The interior space is well laid out and contains pretty much everything you'd want in a portable hotel room of sorts.

Moving On

Scott is getting the itch to build something else, however, so this sweet Super Duty is now up for sale. Considering the cost of other overlanding rigs out there on the market, it seems like a fairly good deal, especially for someone looking to get off the grid for weeks at a time in a tidy package.
