Home-Built Mega Cab Bumpside Ford Pickup Project Is Ultra Cool
Another "what if" kind of build that we find intriguing.
Mega Big
Back in the 1960s and 1970s, SuperCrew/Crew Cab pickups weren't popular, as people generally used their sedans to haul the family around, while the trucks were reserved for work purposes. Things have changed, of course, and now four-door trucks outsell regular cabs by a significant margin. However, the folks over at Half Moon Customs wanted something a bit bigger, and they're doing precisely that with this Mega Cab Bumpside build.
Origin Story
Of course, Mega Cab is something that Ram offers on its pickups, which is essentially a step above the typical Crew Cab. There's added room behind the rear doors, which provides more space for those that covet extra interior volume. The Mega Cab Ram is roughly 11 inches longer than the equivalent Crew Cab model.
Lots of Work
Since this particular build is longer than a factory Crew Cab, the team decided to lend it the Mega Cab name, which makes sense. As one might imagine, this isn't a simple project by any means, however, a ton of thought and ingenuity must go into the process. Part of that involves beefing up the roof and other components, which in this case come from a donor Ford van.
Double Your Pleasure
Otherwise, sourcing an extra cab to stick behind the factory unit was fairly easy - the team just chopped up another pickup that was destined for the scrap heap. If all of that isn't enough, the team at Half Moon is also giving this elongated pickup a panoramic sunroof, just like a modern-day Blue Oval truck comes with.
OEM Like
The bulk of this particular episode is dedicated to working on mating the two cabs together in a manner that makes it not only look good but also drive like an OEM vehicle. That's obviously a tall task, and this project is going to take some time to complete, but so far, it's pretty darn interesting.
Pure Gold
While we come across plenty of projects online worth following, this Mega Cab Bumpside is easily one of the most unique ones currently in progress. For those that are used to the instant gratification automotive TV provides, it might prove a little tedious, but for those of us that love to see the finer details of how things are done, it's pure gold.
