Things To Look Out For

The Ford F-150 is America's best-selling vehicle, and that has been the case for decades. However, while the F-150 has proven to be mostly reliable for the bulk of its lifespan, like any other vehicle out there, certain iterations do have their known issues that are worth looking out for - particularly if you're in the market for one. Thankfully, there's a lot of great data out there, including owner-reported problems submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) via Car Complaints, which in this case reveal the most common issues with the 2023 F-150, in particular.

Fuel System

First up, we have the fuel system, which has garnered a couple of complaints from owners to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). One owner notes that the "vehicle malfunctions at start-up. Will not turn on and displays 'stop safely now' message. Has also thrown codes for low battery voltage that simply disappear. Vehicle malfunction at start-up does not throw code." Another owner had the same problem with the startup, as well as the same message. They later took the truck to the dealer, but haven't reported back with info on what might have caused the issue.

Body and Paint

A couple of owners have also complained about the body and paint of their 2023 F-150, but both of those cases are related specifically to the panoramic sunroof. In both cases, the sunroof "exploded" while the vehicle was in motion, even though nothing came in contact with the glass. However, this isn't the first time we've seen this problem with a Ford vehicle,  as a small number of models have suffered from this issue dating all the way back to 2007 - prompting at least one lawsuit from an Escape owner.

Windows and Windshield

Speaking of glass, the NHTSA has also received two complaints in this particular area as well. However, both of these are also related to exploding glass, "Driving on highway at 70mph and sunroof on the vehicle 'explodes/blows out,'" one owner stated. "Glass shattered. No other vehicles ahead or overpass above. No outside object caused damage. The sound of the explosion caused me to brake severely and slow down, putting vehicles behind me at risk. Shattered glass also caused risk to drivers behind. The problem has been confirmed by dealer and component inspected by manufacturer."

Engine

On the engine side of the equation, the NHTSA has received two complaints as well - one for an owner who experienced the aforementioned "stop safely now" message when trying to start the vehicle and another who suffered from a problem with the battery after just 4,600 miles.

Drivetrain

Things escalate a bit when we move on to the 2023 F-150's drivetrain, which has garnered six official complaints. Some of these are related to trucks that didn't start or stalled out with no warning, while others point to a transmission that shifts itself into park at low speed - a problem that prompted a recall in some other cases. One other owner reported having surface rust on their mechanical components when they took delivery of their pickup, a problem that has plagued the F-150 for some time now.

Electrical

However, our number one reported issue related to the 2023 F-150 revolves around its electrical system, which has garnered eight complaints thus far. Most of these are also related to a "no start" situation, while another two complained of a "loud electrical/static pop coming from the speakers, followed by extremely loud static noise which went on for several seconds." Otherwise, these issues include an overheating mobile charging cord for the Lightning, which is lumped in with its ICE brethren in this case.
