Daily Slideshow: Forum Members' Awesome Off-Road Adventures

Whether their Fords are the main means of locomotion or used for towing toys, forum members don't always off-road, but when they do they do it spectacularly.

Nevada High Desert

Forum member, thread starter, and damn fine photographer f350ktm got the stone rolling by posting photos from his annual excursion to high desert country in Nevada, asking this question: "How about you, been off road lately?" The Ford truck that took him on the trip was this F350 Super Duty, sporting a Carli 2.5 Pintop suspension system, a full Deaver spring pack, and Nitto Ridge Grappler 37X12.5 R18 tires over Method Race Wheels 301s.

But there's more to this story. It wasn't just a look-see at the high country member f350ktm was after, he hit the nail on the head when he said, "What does the Super Duty make possible? Off-roading of a different type." He wasn't poetically suggesting that the Ford experience is unlike any other, he meant a literally different type: motorcycles.

Orange You Glad

As you may have gleaned from the second half of his user name, forum member f350ktm is a KTM motorcycle fan, which, as it turns out, is not all that uncommon among Ford Truck Enthusiasts, with other members stating, "I bleed orange too—EXC500 and 1190 here," and, "KTMs are the way to roll."

Things to See in the Desert

As often happens, the discussion was born, and member f350ktm filled in a few of the blanks about his trip. The area in his photos is the Black Rock Desert playa, and surrounding range, in Northern Nevada—a place he, his family, and friends journey to each year to guide their bikes on off-road explorations. One outing that sticks out in his memory is when he and his sons were on the playa in October 1997, hoping to witness the world land speed record being broken by either Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America or the Thrust SSC (pictured above) with Brit Andy Green driving. The new record of over 763 mph wasn't set until a few days later but f350ktm and his sons were able to ride within a couple hundred meters of the Spirit of America base camp, and when the camp's crew saw them the crew motioned for them to come in, chatted with the bikers a bit and even let them take pictures!

Don't Call it the Yukon

Forum member Alaskan_Warbird posted pics from... yes, Alaska. The photos from last June might look like January to many of us but beauty, while free, isn't always balmy. He has headed up a 4-wheeler trail, "at the crest of a river valley out in the middle of nowhere with no cell coverage." It was his first time taking a dually carrying a Mammoth truck camper up such a remote trail but reports the results were, "7 tons of awesome," and that he was super pleased with the rig's handling. When another member asked him if he was packing firepower in case of a "toothy creature" looking for dinner, Alaskan_Warbird replied, "I'm actually thinking about picking up a custom-made chest holster and getting a .44 mag revolver but that's overkill for anything except a grizzly."

Don't Play in the Mud

GMC Jimmy owner and the man of few words Beast2017 provided us with photos of his orange and white four-wheeler axle-deep, check that, wheels-submerged in the wet brown stuff. All the better to keep his camper-hauling Ford F-350 pickup clean, though there's no word on if it was called in to tow the GMC out of a tough spot.

Glacier National Park

Another nice F-350 Super Duty, also in white, is Rogue F350's, seen here at Ford Creek in Montana's Glacier National Park. The forum member snapped this photo on his journey back Kintla Lake, near the US/Canada border.

The Details

We end where we began. Sharp-eyed readers may have noticed, as a forum member JeepPuller did, that f350ktm's King Ranch was rocking a slightly different sticker scheme than stock. Member f350ktm agreed with JeepPuller that clean was the way to go, adding, "I am not a sticker fan unless I choose to add them." As proof, he provided pics of his better half Jacque doing the de-stickering, as well as some tasteful custom sticker application. From jet cars to decoration day, it seems that Ford trucks provide an ideal base for almost any family activity.
