Ford F-450 Gets Stuck Off-Roading, Making For a Cool Rescue
It took a bit of extra effort to save this large rig.
Major Recovery
YouTube is full of videos of just about anything one can think of, and lots of things that we'd probably rather not. However, one of our personal favorite types of videos to check out are those documenting off-road recoveries, as it's always interesting to see the critical thinking and ingenuity required to extract stuck vehicles from remote locations. This particular rescue of a Ford F-450 by the folks at Rudy's Adventure and Design fits the bill as one that requires a bit of extra effort to pull off.
Tough Terrain
This modified F-450's owner was just out enjoying the trails of Rattlesnake Gulch, which is located near Toquerville Falls in Utah when things went wrong. Filled with large rocks, this area proved to be a bit too much for the two-wheel-drive truck, which found itself stuck and the owner seeking some help to get it out.
Help Arrives
He got that help from Rudy Wetzel, who is the son of Matt Wetzel behind the mega-popular YouTube Channel Matt's Off-Road Recovery. Like father like son truly applies in this particular case, as the younger Wetzel heads out to perform the tough extraction in his Jeep Cherokee XJ, which has been beefed up specifically for these kind of duties.
Many Challenges
The F-450 is a super-heavy rig and also has a flat tire when Wetzel arrives, and the surface is quite slick thanks to heavy rainfall from the night before, all of which makes this rescue even more difficult. Regardless, he manages to make it to the truck with no trouble, though it's pretty clear he'll have to take a different route on the way out.
Heavy Tow
Wezel manages to get the F450 free with his winch, but he still has to tow the portly truck up an incline to get it out of this predicament. As most are well aware, this thing isn't light by any measure, particularly with a big utility box mounted out back, but the XJ manages to get it out regardless.
Modest Build, Tough Trail
In spite of its lack of four-wheel-drive, the F-450 has been treated to a couple of modifications such has a modest lift and larger tires, though it still isn't exactly what one might expect to find out on more difficult trails like this - and for good reason, as we can see here.
Important Lesson
Saving this Ford took a whopping four hours of hard work and ingenuity, presenting some logistical challenges along the way. But it's also a pretty good reminder that we shouldn't venture out into places that our trucks - or personal off-roading skills - can't handle.
