Long Term Rivalry

For a very long time, Ford sold its F-Series pickup under one guise, at least until 1999, when it decided to separate its lighter-duty F-150 from the heavier-duty models by creating a new name for that particular lineup - the Super Duty. Since then, The Blue Oval has continued to dominate the pickup sales charts in America, with a totally refreshed Super Duty bowing for the 2023 model year. It isn't alone, however, as one of its chief rivals - the Chevrolet Silverado HD - was also refreshed for the 2024 model year, giving us the perfect opportunity to see how these hard-working trucks stack up against each other.

Trim Levels

As has been the case for some time, the 2024 Ford Super Duty trim level lineup consists of the base XL, followed by the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited, giving buyers a wide array of choices in that regard, ranging from basic work truck to ultra-luxurious yet capable hauler.

GM's Silverado HD is right there in terms of trim level options, offering customers the WT, Custom, LT, LTZ, ZR2, and High Country, though it lags behind the Super Duty a bit in terms of luxurious choices.

Configurations

Perhaps the most important choice when it comes to these heavy-duty haulers is configuration, and in that regard, Ford offers the ever-popular F-250 as the base model, followed by the F-350 and F-350 before we move into the medium-duty range. All three can be had in regular, SuperCab, or Crew Cab configuration with a single rear wheel, two- or four-wheel-drive, and regular or long beds, while the F-350 and F-450 can also be ordered in a dual-rear-wheel guise for extra towing power.

Meanwhile, GM offers a very similar list of configurations for its Silverado HD lineup in 2500 or 3500 guise, as buyers can choose between regular, Double Cab, or Crew Cab body styles with a short or long bed, along with two- or four-wheel-drive.

Engines

The 2024 Ford Super Duty continues to utilize the new 6.8-liter gas V8 as its base powerplant, which churns out 405 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. It's followed by the optional 7.3-liter V8 making 430 hp and 480 lb-ft, as well as two versions of the venerable 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel - one making 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque or 500 and 1,200 in H.O. guise.

As for the Silverado HD, it can be had with a 6.6-liter gas V8 churning out 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, or the optional Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V8, which is rated to produce 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque.

Payload Capacity

What customers are truly looking for in this range is capability, and in that regard, the 2024 Ford Super Duty offers plenty of it, with a max payload capacity of a whopping 8,000 pounds. As for the Silverado HD, tick the right boxes, and it'll haul up to 7,442 pounds.

Pricing

Pricing - as is the case with all new trucks these days - can vary greatly for both of these heated competitors, depending on how one specs them. The 2024 Ford Super Duty starts out at $44,970 for a base F-250 XL regular cab, and tops out at $104,030 for an F-450 Limited. The Silverado 2500 HD can be had for as little as $43,400, with pricing reaching a starting level of $86,585 for a 3500 HD High Country, minus options.
