2021 F-150 PowerBoost Charges Zero Motorcycle Like a Champ
The hybrid F-150 can provide juice for an electric motorcycle on the go.
Power Generator
When Ford introduced its brand new PowerBoost hybrid powertrain for the 2021 F-150, it was obviously well-received. Here is a truck that generates the most power of any model in Ford's venerable F-150 lineup, and is also capable of doubling as a generator that can power an entire house. But as it turns out, the PowerBoost is also capable of providing juice for more than just household appliances.
Range Test
The folks at The Fast Lane Truck just so happen to own an F-150 PowerBoost and were recently testing out a Zero DSR Black Forest electric motorcycle. They wanted to see how far the bike would go on a full charge, so the pickup made for the perfect support vehicle. But this also had them wondering - could they use the PowerBoost to charge the two-wheeler once it died?

Value Proposition
This particular F-150 is equipped with the optional 7.2 kW inverter/generator that costs an additional $750. Its 3.5-liter PowerBoost V6 powertrain produces a combined 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque and will travel up to 700 miles on a tank of gas. This cheaper XL model has a retail price of around $51k, making it a true value proposition.

Electric Power
Meanwhile, the Zero Motorcycles DSR Black Forest Edition comes equipped with a 14.4 kWh battery pack, 6 kW onboard charger, and 70 horsepower. Zero says that it can travel up to 157 miles in the city on a single charge, or up to 91 miles in mixed city/highway riding. This particular model has a price tag of around $21,500.

Charge Me Up
TFLT wound up getting 93 miles out of the two-wheeler before it hit 0 percent, at which point they loaded it up in the bed of the pickup and hooked it up to the F-150's 240v circuit. No one really knew if it would work, but the bike started pulling 6-6.2 kW of power from the pickup on the ride back to the office.

Works Flawlessly
On the 1.5 hour drive home, the Zero wound up charging from (ironically) 0 percent all the way up to 93 percent. In the meantime, the F-150 chugged along as normal and even returned 20 miles-per-gallon in the process.

Perfect Pair
These are indeed impressive results, and prove that the F-150 PowerBoost makes the perfect companion for an electric motorcycle. Not only can it haul the bike if it dies in the middle of nowhere, but it can also charge it up with no problem in just a short period of time.
