One Fine Four-Wheeler

It might seem strange today, but four-wheel drive pickups weren't always the preferred choice. Most folks could get by with two-wheel drive, and the off-road craze hadn't yet truly grasped the nation.

So prior to 1959, Ford dialed up Marmon-Herrington for all of their 4x4 conversion needs. And even when that changed, it took decades before the Blue Oval began selling four-wheel-drive F-Series pickups in any sort of big numbers.

Better Than New

Looking at this gorgeous '64 F-100, it's kind of hard to see why. Granted, this isn't a totally original redo, but it is a tastefully upgraded truck. According to the seller, Cotton Warehouse, that's the result of a "Concours restoration."

Original...Mostly

Aside from a new set of Eagle Alloy wheels and 33x12.5R15 BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires, however, most of what's left is pretty original. The blue paint is absolute perfection, and the builder even resisted the urge to replace the painted bumpers with chrome pieces.

Totally Unoffensive

And why not? These pickups are pretty much perfect as is, with no need for fancy or flashy stuff. We honestly prefer the skinny factory tires and painted steel wheels on this old 4x4s, but the new rolling stock isn't offensive by any means.

Rarely Driven?

According to the seller, this vintage four-wheeler also only shows 60,888 miles on the odometer. No telling if it's rolled over or not, but the truck has only accumulated 800 or so miles since the restoration was completed.

Rare, but Not Priceless

The nice thing about these early factory four-wheel-drive F-Series trucks is that despite their rarity, values haven't blown through the roof yet. So you can cruise around in a pickup like this without worrying too much about scratches or rock chips.

Three Shades of Perfection

The interior of this '64 is every bit as beautiful as the outside, and it looks to be in mostly original condition. It's also quite attractive with two different shades of blue complementing white hues on the steering wheel, door panels, and various other spots.

Strange but Cool

Another cool thing about this truck is that it has a floor-mounted 4-speed transmission, which is obviously the most desired combo. If you're familiar with these trucks, it's almost a strange sight sitting next to the shifter for the transfer case.

Showing Off

Lift the hood, and you'll find a nicely detailed and original 292 V8. The engine bay is extremely clean and sanitary, perhaps even more so than new. And that's obviously a nice touch when you're trying to buy something you want to show off.

Nice, but Pricey

Altogether, this '64 F-100 is one tasty package. But it's clear that the seller didn't get the memo about these trucks remaining in the affordable territory, given the steep $46,500 asking price. Still, that won't stop us from admiring one of the nicer early 4x4s we've ever laid eyes on!
