1964 Ford F-100 Is a Factory Four-Wheeler
By Brett Foote

This tastefully upgraded '64 F-100 makes us wonder why folks didn't catch on to the 4x4 craze a little sooner.

What?? Why does FTE promote such misinformation on their site? Stop it. The first factory F-100 and F-250 4x4s were offered in 1959. Not 1964. Stu

Edit - thank you for editing out the statement suggesting 1964 was the first year for the factory 4x4s. Stu

"tastefully upgraded" ? Aftermarket non period wheels always have a way of altering the original character of these vehicles. Mag wheels are generic, the vehicle is not. A set of bias ply 6.50-16 goodyear extra grip mud and snows with 16" innie wheels and bottle cap argent innie caps ( rear wheels only} and you'd have the whole nostalgic package. Glad to see the painted bumper stay! Next in line after the very collectable Bronco?

Outside mirrors are also "gypo's" (aftermarket sold by auto parts stores).

Back then, the only people that bought 4WD's were those that needed them.

Today, probably 75% of the people that buy all types of 4WD vehicles, never take them off the road.

No way to prove it, but I bet the number is closer to 90%. Very rarely see one with mud on the sides or dirt in the wheel wells.

You CA boys must have never driven in snow. Those of us who are country dwellers commonly need to get out before the plows find their way to our roads. Stu

You know, I thought about that after I wrote it. I should have said 99% of the 4WD trucks in CA never get taken offroad.

Here in VA, most families have a 4WD or AWD as their primary or 2nd car for driving in the winter weather.

I figured you’d have learned to drive in snow after moving east. Especially with VA’s mountains. Stu

I figure tall and narrow MS tires ( short of using chains ) works the best for about everything except sand dunes. Large wide tires mostly for vanity.

I carry chains but have never had to use them, and have never gotten stuck. Closest I came to needing them was racing a blizzard crossing Donner Pass years ago hauling a buddy’s “new” 57 panel home from San Jose. Hubs locked and white knuckles. Agree that tall and skinny is the only way to go. Stu
