Door locks on a '61 Unibody

I just picked up a new project and am on a steep learning curve here. But the drivers side has no key to lock it. I've searched, but can't find anything about this. Actually, I can lock it, I just can't get back in except on the pass. side. What's up with that?

My `62 short bed uni is the same way. The dude I bought it from said the reason was because back in the day when it was built, the streets were so narrow that people slid across the seat and got out the passenger side. Don't know how much of this is true, but sounds good to me. Besides, I'm gonna run a R/F door lock anyway.
Maybe someone has heard of another reason?

Wow, that's just weird! So does your door key match your ignition? Maybe I'll go that route too, but I'm trying to keep this a traditional rod project.

My ignition matches the lock cylinder in the passenger door. I don't know if this is how it came...I know that this is how it is. There is no lock cylinder or lock cylinder hole in my driver side door. I agree...weird!

Hmm, ok, now I gotta find a vendor that sells the lock cylinder and matching key so I can lock this thing up. Anyone know of a vendor? I looked at a few and nobody has anything for this year. The rf deal will have to wait for now.

A locksmith friend once told me that the door lock cylinders on my truck were the same ones used on Mustangs, Falcons etc. (1965 suppose).
I think Dennis Carpenter has lock cyls and a locksmith could key them alike.

The drivers door exterior lock was available. My '61 Uni project is like previously described, passenger door only. My other truck has a lock in the driver's door but the key is a round top style. The ignition and passenger door have a flat top key. The drivers door hole has the same slot so I think it was a punch cut hole instead of being drilled. Someone on here had access to parts books for the '61-62 accessories. I would be interested in the real story on these locks. Oh yeah, the project is getting power windows and power keyless entry locks from Autoloc (Ad was in Truckin Magazine).

My '62 stepside is like that too. Didn't notice it until I got it home and was doing some real head scratching. I was able to get a set of locks from a guy in Oklahoma thinking I'd match them with the ignition. Then the ignition switch went toast .............. and the saga continues.

Any good locksmitch can match all your locks to 1 key. AS far as the truck only having one lock, yes, back in the old days they used to paralell park in towns and cities, so they used to get out on the curb side. It's a carry over from the early days. my 50 F-1 has the same setup.
It appears that the 61-62 pickups had the one door, ign setuip as standard, but could order a second lock for the drivers side, all keyed alike as an option. in 63, they went to the 2 door locks as standard.

That's all wacky! My 62 Unibody has locks in both doors, and the parts doors I yanked off a 61 Unibody had locks too. I've never even heard of having only one lock on the passenger side. Crazyness I tell you.

Remember that was 40+ years ago and people thought differently back then. Also you have to remember it was a truck, a utiliarian vehicle. Not like today as a glorified car with a box on back. 2 locks! That was splurging back then!!!!!

Yeah, but I would think they would have put it on the drivers side only. I'm not convinced on this idea of getting out in busy traffic. It's a truck, so most of it's life wouldn't be on busy streets anyway.
