2004 Ford Ranger: loud clicking noise from engine area

Came home today and as I was pulling into the driveway a loud clicking sound started coming from the engine area. Truck just came out of service after shop replaced the thermostat housing. Drove around 60 to 70 miles today with no problems... no noise.

Will investigate tomorrow. Unless something obvious pops up... like the fan is hitting something, I will remove the serpentine belt, first, to see if the engine runs quite. That will eliminate the possibility it is coming from the engine itself. Then, I can try and turn the water pump and the alternator by hand to see what that gets me.

Then go from there.

Does this sound like a plan or ??

video of noise

Well, cannot get the video to run but after removing the belt the sound is coming from the engine.

Think it is blown a rod or perhaps lifters. When I give it some gas it stumbles.

Seeing as you have a 4.0, you might be hearing timing chain slap. If the sound is coming from the right front of the engine it could be the driver’s side primary chain guide or tensioner. If it’s coming from more of the rear of the engine on the passenger side it might be the passenger primary chain. There is also a jack shaft chain lower down on the front and sometimes a balance shaft chain near the underside of the engine. You can pop off the valve covers and get a look at the primary chain guides and tensioners. And you can look at the roller followers and hydraulic lifters there too.

Thanks for the reply. Whatever it is, it does not sound good... or cheap.

Found a very nice 2014 F150 4X4 XLT locally so will go in that direction. This 2004 Ranger has served me well for the past 8 years or so.

Cannot see putting any more $$ into it, however, and I have too much on my plate to tinker around with it right now.
