Fuse box wiring

Hello, I am working on a 1994 Ford F150 that originally came with a 300 in-line six. Four-wheel-drive with a five speed I recently swapped in a naturally aspirated 429 with a ZF5 manual five speed. I had a very difficult time with trying to sort out wiring for the ignition system, so I ended up bypassing all of the OEM wiring completely, and just installed a painless six rocker switch panel to run my ignition, electric fans, electric water pump, fuel pump module. I currently have the power distribution box in the engine compartment, completely disconnected. I need to figure out a way to make the headlights, turn signals, brake lights, wipers, etc. work and I’m thinking that if I can just run power to the main fuse block in the cab that I could accomplish that does anyone have any insight into whether this would work or not? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated paragraph as an aside I have one remaining wire that I could use from that six rocker switch panel that is an accessory switch.

thanks for any help

I think you should pull all the fuses out of the fuse panel, then run power to it, and plug in fuses one at a time for the things you want to operate such as headlights, wipers, etc.

do you know if the headlights / tail lights run through fuses in both the cab fuse panel AND the power distribution box in the engine bay? Looking at diagrams it looks like some of the maxi fuses in the PDM feed different fuses at the cab fuse panel……

Yes, some of the in-cab stuff, especially the ignition switch gets it's power from the underhood panel. I thought you were bypassing all that so you would bring that power inside the cab separately.

Is there some reason you think you cannot just use everything as stock but just not hook up the engine stuff that you are not using?

trust me I tried to use the oem wiring. I spent hours and hours trying to sort it out and kept having problems with circuits backfeeding…. So I just bypassed it all and now use the painless rocker switches for their specific components…. (Push button start / ignition/ fuel pump/ electric fans &water pump). You are correct, I’ve completely bypassed the PDB under the hood. I’m now wondering if can find the primary feed for the in the cab fuse panel and run it to the battery if I can make those other electrical pieces work (lights, wipers, etc….)

On the older trucks, like my 91, the ignition switch and the in-cab fuse panel get their power directly from the positive battery cable at the solenoid. They have fusible links in-line to protect the circuits. The PDB box underhood replaced that setup.

so am I able to bypass that PDB box and still have functioning lights, etc. from the fuse panel in the cab

Ostensibly yes. The things you want to work like the lights get their power from the in-cab fuse box. You will be providing power to the in-cab fuse box and ignition switch via a different path but downstream from the fusebox it will all stay the same.

I’ve got one accessory rocker left to use. Fused 12v source when on. Curious if I can use that to tap into the in cab fuse panel and just flip the switch to turn it on / off
