My Dura Spark II move

Simple intention ....... "Turn it open side up so it doesn't leak it's potting and maybe cool it."

OEM location was out of the way in a corner, mounted on a vertical wall with three rusty self drilling sheet metal screws. OEM one lasted into May 2016 when it died. I got it home after cooling it off a few times. I replaced it then with a long carried spare which had leaked its potting into a box while stored behind the seat. It still worked, but leaked a little on the fender and was discarded soon and replaced by my current one, which has not leaked since May 2016.

I had considered moving it to inside the cab, but decided to just "Turn it open side up so it doesn't leak it's potting and maybe cool it.". I used a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum, 8" x6-1/2" and some 1/4-20 nut-serts to mount further forward on the inner fender. I extended my truck side plugs about 11", using 16 ga. wires, spliced, soldered, shrink wrapped, covered. I found that my current DS-II, my good spare NIB, and the OEM one I kept, all had the mount holes already tapped 1/4-20 threads so I used them to mount it under the plate.

I thought about just remounting it but leaving it way back beside the hinge, but was not so easy a reach. To do my wire work, was easier reaching in behind the hood. I may get a couple new truck side connectors though, I cut for my splices a little short, but it works. I did try that OEM DS-II but "no joy", it's still dead. Anyway, it started and run after I finished, so I didn't mess up my wires, and it's in an easier to reach place if ever I need to swap it out. My truck's OEM jack is long gone.

I did this thread just in case someone else is considering it.

Your relocation plate reminds me of the cooling plates sold for the PMD (pump module driver) that the GM 6.5L turgo diesels had available to cool them.
I drove one 15-years up to around 295k miles, still ran like a singer. But, _ _ those electronic PMD's went south like a Dura-Spark without warning. _ _ I carried a spare.

Can we still order a FOMOCO Dura Spark from Ford today ?

I don't know. I seen them claim to be on Ebay, but for the price a fellow could buy three or four over the counter and carry extras as spares. I notice my OEM had Motorcraft molded in the housing and had a non sticky brown potting, not the gooey black.
