2008 F150 4.6L 2V AC system performance not right/intermittent
Hello all,
My AC system is acting up on my truck. Had a complete vacuum and refill on refrigerant. AC works for a while, usually early in the day, then will not come back on. The AC compressor wont kick on. The mechanic tech at the local shop couldnt figure it out, he left off saying something about the low presssure switch and high pressure switch (or sensor??) not triggering the AC compressor.
Any AC experts out there care to chime in on where I should start to troubleshoot / diagnose? Thanks in advance,.
Is it that the ac clutch isn’t clicking when it’s not working? If so, wait for it to stop working and then pull the ac relay with the engine off. You can jump the load terminals of the ac relay with a short length of wire. If the ac clutch clicks then it’s probable that the ac clutch is not being commanded on, and the problem is upstream, maybe the pressure switches or pressure but also many other possibilities there too. If the ac clutch does not click, then it could be the clutch coil or something else downstream.
if the clutch is clicking and the pulley is spinning which the engine on and ac running but you have no ac, know that there is a bushing between the pulley and the input shaft of the compressor that sometimes goes bad. See this video
This old of a truck, check the clutch gap for excessive wear. Your symptoms are consistent with an excessive gap due to accumulated wear.
When it next fails and you are able, tap the front of the clutch place with a stick or the handle of a screwdriver. if it pulls in, that confirms the issue. or, you can measure the gap with feeler gauges. Should be under .030". Worn and intermittent ones usually are near or over .050". Perform a shimectomy to fix for quite a while. No need to replace unless the shim is already been removed.
