Auto Metal Direct...supposedly they are now making them with the FORD stamped in them....but as mentioned, find someone parting out and get an original
X100 repair yours, or get a used OEM one and repair it. Have you tried FB MP? 99% of the reopops (complete tailgates) are thin and will taco if open and stood on. So the urban legend says.
Years ago I bought one of the LMC re-pops tg. I painted the truck and the first time I stood on the tg it flexed and a sheet of paint came off.
Go, as the other members said, with an original. But be prepared to rebuild it. The one I found in the jy cost $50. I had to reweld the factory 'nuts' into place since the factory tack weld had long since broken. I also replaced the handle plastic rod ends, Also required some body work, but now I have a great, solid tg.
BTW, I recently saw a cherry dentside tg on Craig's list. It had all the moldings too. I believe it was for San Diego or Temecula. It might be worth a look.
Good luck.
Don't recall ever seeing a picture posted here of a bent one.
In re-pop world there is still good/better/best....i would consider getting the best repop available if finding a good used wasn't affordable.
I had a truck that came with a repop one and that truck did as much work as it would have in 1979, and never had any tailgate damage or bending. Engines resting on the tailgate, truck bed full of pressure treated 6x6, firewood stacks...etc.
And FYI for the group, since we are talking TG's. Here is a thread that talks about using a 67-72 tailgate on a 73-79. Works, but the body lines will be off.
