‘84 f-350 fuel tank question

Hi all,
I’ve got an 84 f350 with a busted front fuel tank. I’ve been shopping around for a new tank, and they’re pretty cheap.

Here’s my problem—my 460 truck uses the low pressure electric fuel pump in the (3 pin) sending unit rather than the a mechanical pump. All the tanks I’ve seen online seem to only work with the 2-pin fuel sending unit (with no fuel pump).

Has anybody had experience with this issue? Will the low pressure pump/sending unit fit into a gas tank made for just the sending unit? Or is there a later model year tank that will fit that I should be looking at instead?

thanks for the help,
Mateo

Welcome to FTE

I am not up on all the different fuel system from tank(s) to motor unless it is like my simple system of my 81 F100 with a 300 six and 3 port valve.

But here is what "I" believe any tank that does not have an in tank pump, sender only, would have a small opening.
Any tank(s) that have an in tank pump would have a large opening to fit the pump down in.
Now I could be wrong on the opening size but I cant see putting a pump in a small opening.

Do you know the opening size of your tank?

Check with LMC and MTS fuel tanks for the proper sender. MTS has a nice look up by year, engine and fuel system for the senders they sell. Dave is probably right again about the opening. It would likely be the large opening with the locking ring.

Any 1984 and later tank will have the large opening. All the tanks are the same. So they changed ALL the tanks 1984-up to accommodate the in tank fuel pumps for the 460. That is why a 1984 tank for a 300 six equipped truck is different than a tank for a 1982 300 six equipped truck. Both did not use in tank pumps, but the large opening change made around 1983-84 made the sending unit diameters different.

It’s strange because my rear tank (also was leaking gas lol) had the large hole opening but the midship tank had a smaller opening. The midship one also had three screws holding in the pump instead of the usual lock ring. I wonder if it might have been aftermarket?
I guess I’ll just measure the diameter of my fuel pump and call suppliers to see if it matches up with the hole.
thanks for all the help!

Your 84 is on the change over year. May be why you have one of each hole size?
