Replacing/Rebuilding Spicer D44 Locking Hubs

Howdy, just joined this forum as I am restoring a 1973 F250 4x4, Camper Special for my wife (long story). I am a classic Bronco guy so some of the restoration is familiar other things not so much. The truck has the larger Spicer locking hubs for a Dana 44 on it and the plastic locking switch is completely destroyed (by the looks of it is the smaller style plastic switch). My question is...are there aftermarket hubs that can be used to convert from the OEM locking hubs and if so, what do people suggest. If not, any recommendations on finding parts for the hubs other than Torqueking.com and LMC (both are out of stock). Trying to find info on the internet has not been very successful.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Warn and Mile Marker should both have aftermarket locking hubs for your application. Personally, I'd go with the Warn stainless steel locking hubs. I put on Mile Marker hubs at one time, and the chrome plating flaked/peeled off after a few years, and looked terrible. There are lots of other options as far retailers for repop parts and/or aftermarket. Dennis Carpenter, NPD, Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. Others will chime in soon. Post some pics of your wife's truck as well.

The large hub they are reproduced for, I believe the small ones you can still buy. I like the old Spicer's but if you want to replace them I'd go with the Warn premium hubs. they've been the gold standard forever.

This is the large hub on a 44 or 60,

Well, I didn't follow my own protocol and take a lot of before pictures before started tearing into it.
Cream Puff on the left is the name my wife gave the F250.

My truck came with Selectro hubs. They are simple and work great.
I'll trade you for your hubs if they are like the ones in 440 sixpack's picture.

Thanks for the offer Rubiranch, but I would like to keep the originals if I can possibly rebuild them. If I can't figure out a way I will consider your offer.
Not sure if the destroyed lever is my only problem. But it is the most obvious at this point.

Those are the big ones for the higher GVW. you can buy those dials lots of places.

Probably someone broke them trying to turn them with a wrench, look them over good to see if there was a reason or if they were just dumb.

I think they were just dumb. The internals don't seem to have too much wear at first glance, but I need to dig in a little deeper. Thanks for the link!

I HATED the Selectro hubs that came onmy truck.
They are simple and work perfectly.
I'll never understand why Ford made thos 9 pound hubs so "complex".
I hunted for a long time and never could find a set of the big original hubs.

One day I made the comment on my thread "the only thing I hate about my truck are the Selectro hubs", because there were not the iconic big Ford factory hubs.
Well, another forum member sent me a PM and told me that he had a set that he would give me. He would either ship them to me or I could take a road trip and come and pick them up. So I drove the 1000 mile round trip and got to meet him, shake his hand and thank him in person.
Thank ypu again moneypit ford.

5 out of the 6 bolt threads were stripped, had helicoils in them or busted off bolts in both spindles.
It was pretty ugly in there.

My close friend Geof, who I bought my truck from drilled and tapped 6 new holes for my new hubs.
Geof is my life saver.

I bought these for the hubs from Torque King 4X4

These old Ford trucks really do need the factory hub.
I'm glad that you are keeping yours.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I was able to get the hubs rebuilt based on your input and parts from Dennis Carpenter and TorqueKing.com.

Much appreciated!
