I’m at a loss. I have had people tell me what tires to avoid for trucks that tow a lot and see a lot of gravel. So what do people recommend for a tire for towing and lots of gravel? My factory Michelin’s have 23k on them and they are toast. I’ve got the basic steel 17” rims. I’ve looked at BFG but I’m not sure where else to look. I’d like American made and somewhat aggressive since we get a lot of snow and mud.
You can check out the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT. I believe they re made in the USA and they have had a lot of great feedback. I can speak to the Falcon Wildpeak AT4's being really good tires, however, I am unsure of which sizes are made in the US. The K03's are nice looking tires, but I have read a number of posts stating lots of balancing issues...
I have these on my F-150, and I love them. I last had some Coopers about 10 years ago, and they were junk... but these are much better and are made in USA.
TOYO AT3's, best tires I've ran on any of my trucks or all-around great performance, obviously not a mud tire, but for everything else, hands down best I've ran on my "fleet" for snow/ice/rain, dirt, wet grass, towing etc... over time, I will probably have all my trucks except maybe my wood/wheeling truck running them. Got 41k out of them on my F350 drw/4wd
Best all-terrain tire I've used, better than the KO2's, are General Grabber ATx series tires (I started with the AT2, have used the AT3's and the newer ATx's). They're a VERY similar tread pattern to the KO2's, but a softer tread compound so better wet and off-road/rock traction. You do lose a little lifetime and MPG - but not much if you inflate them properly. They'll pick up and throw rocks, so if you're worried about dings from that you'll want a set of flaps to keep that down, but I have NEVER gotten stuck with a set of them.
The AT2's were a lot cheaper than the KO2's when I first started using them, that gap has since closed - I think the ATx's are only like $50 cheaper than the KO3's now, but I would argue they're still a better tire. I have towed 10k with them on pavement, gravel, loose/wet ground, snow, etc, and never had an issue.
I have had a few sets of generals and I did like them but after 5k miles they would get squirrelly on me. They would cause the truck to hop on corners. Had them on three trucks and my dad had a set as well and they all did the same thing. Our roads are really bad though. Had a set of Kenda Klever’s on a 79 f350 when I was in HS and I really liked them but none of the local shops want to deal with them.
I just put Kenda Klever R/T’s on my truck. Only a few thousand miles so far, but I love them. Might be of interest to you.
I know nothing about these tires but that is a funny name. Reminds me of Australian off roader saying Kinda Clever.
I look for tires with 3 ply sidewalls for more stability and tread patterns on the sidewalls for extra protection. There are other tires that fit this but for me I have been using BFGoodrich KO3.
