Ford e450 v10 motorhome, when to change transmission fluid?
Hello. Want to get an opinion on when to do transmission fluid change.
I got e450 v10 2011 motorhome with 31k miles
Manual says Im nowhere near transmission fluid change yet but then it says to change fluid
at 30k miles if driving off road/dusty conditions. All my camping is off road but I
dont go more than 3-4 miles in on dusty gravel/dirt roads, most miles
on it are paved highway miles.
When motorhome is driven its usually loaded and with full tanks.
Some mountain driving, definitely, in hot weather sometimes.
Do I really need transmission service at 30k like some mechanics suggest?
Also I had a incident when I shifted incorrectly while in motion and transmission was grinding
for several seconds but its been 7 months ago and I saw no obvious issues since, wonder if this warrants fluid change.
Fluid looks normal, pinkish and clear.
Another thing is a shop is offering cheaper drain and fill service while dealer says it only
makes sense to do fluid flush service or do nothing at all.
Im going to be selling this RV next year and wonder if its justified to pay for fluid flush or not now, I do plan to put 7k or so miles on it this year
Flush and fill is easy if your pan has a drain plug, but your only getting half the fluid if that. None the less better than nothing. If the fluid is still looking like new, clean, not burnt smelling at all Id not bother yet.
Im not in a position to work on it myself and Im traveling full time in it this year, boondocking out in nature. I have an option to do flush at the dealership. Or drain and fill in a shop outside the dealership for half the price. I guess flush at the dealer will get the most of it
Manual says 30k fluid change if towing, basically motorhome is towing 100% of time because of weight, plus I towed a car behind it accross the country twice.
Good transmission fluid is a necessity assuming you want your trans to live a long time. If you wait till it smells burnt you're a little late. It doesn't matter who changes it, but get it changed sooner rather than later.
