2020-2022 Ford F-Series Trucks Recalled Over Fuel Pump Failures

2020-2022 Ford F-Series Trucks Recalled Over Fuel Pump Failures

Ford Motor Company is recalling select diesel-powered 2020-2022 Ford F-Series Super Duty models due to an issue with fuel pump failures.

The defect:in affected vehicles, biodiesel deposits may form on the pump drivetrain roller components, which could lead to failure of the high pressure fuel pump.

The hazards:high pressure fuel pump failures can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this issue.

Ok, I understand that biodiesel that sat in the trucks that were sitting in storage, not shipped due to the computer chips missing due to shortages during the pandemic, may have formed some sort of deposits on the rotating metal parts of the high pressure fuel pumps, and this causes accelerated wear and resulting pump failures.
But, what does a pcm update have to do with fixing this???
Seems purely mechanical to me, not electronic.

I remember the full lots of trucks waiting on parts that sat for months on end. This means all the trucks had biodiesel in their tanks, which may have contaminated the pumps. How a PCM patch fixes this is a great mystery.

the pcm update is a shell game

lets bring them in for a pcm update.....then tell the customer the update failed so we replaced your cp4 pump.

easier pill to swallow than causing a mass hysteria by announcing a cp4 replace recall.

The reprogram must be to change the cp4 timing gear relationship to function correctly….the gear must have slipped due to the varnish in the co4 gluing the cups in place.

That sounds like the double talk explanation you would get from a service manager that is just trying to appease you and make you go away...

December 20, 2024 NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V957000

Ford Motor is recalling 295,449 diesel-engine trucks because a defective fuel pump could cause a loss of power, raising the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Tuesday. "Biodiesel deposits may form on the pump drivetrain roller components, which could lead to failure of the high pressure fuel pump," the NHTSA stated. Drivers whose vehicles are affected by the faulty fuel pump may experience "extended crank while starting, a Check Engine Light (CEL), noise and reduced engine power," recall documents show. As of Tuesday, Ford was not aware of any reports of accidents, injuries or fires linked to the fuel pump problem.

The recall applies to the following truck models:
2020-2022 Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600
2021-2022 Ford F-650, F-750
Ford dealers will update the powertrain control module software free of charge, according to the automaker. Notification letters are expected to be mailed to owners of affected vehicles on Jan. 13, 2025.
Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332; Ford's number for this recall is 24S78.
