Well, its time for a guy to get into the timing cover. I'm leaking radiator fluid from somewhere behind the water pump, and I figure I will plan on replacing the timing cover while I'm in there.
First off, do you agree?
Second, All of the replacement timing cover's say something like "w/o California Emissions; w/o Crank Sensor Hole". I live in California, and need to pass emissions. Can someone help me understand how the timing cover relates to the emissions? Will these covers work for my truck? Thanks in advance!
I didn't know that a there was a different timing cover for the 460 in California. That's very interesting. Paul Kane at High Flow Dynamics would be the one who would know the answer if that's true or not. Yours is probably fine and it is just the gasket between the cover and the block that has deteriorated.
Thanks for the reply and the contact recommendation, Dave. I have a new timing ordered that says "w/o California Emissions". I'll compare with my current one and post any information I learn after taking it apart. Wish a guy luck with these bolts!
I bought a NEW Calif-emissions timing cover a couple of years ago, but I can't remember where I got it, sorry.... I got mine a few years ago since I planned to convert my Federal-emissions Speed-Density EFI '95 7.5L to '96/'97 Mass-air Calif-spec SEFI since I wanted to tweak my new engine build past where the SD computer would accept (Mass-air is more 'tweakable') Yes, I also sourced the proper damper crank-position spacer with the four-pointed star, and the appropriate crank sensor... Also the entire front body harness, Mass-air aircleaner box and related bracket, Mass-air sensor, air tubes, CA-spec 7.5LCPU, and many factory more parts needed for the conversion
The CA-spec timing cover has two threaded bosses for mounting the Crank Position Sensor and related timing pointer.. Standard covers have only one for the timing indicator
Thanks for all the extra information manicmechanic007 and cougrrcj. I now see how the timing cover would be related to the emissions. That's very helpful. And I'm glad to know I don't have to deal worry about it!
This is slightly unrelated, but I'm going to put this specific piece of helpful information here in case anyone is reading this later:
I'm replacing the timing cover on a 91 F-250 460, At the time of writing, most of the timing covers available have an extra oil dipstick hole and fuel pump hole. The kit comes with a blockoff for both holes. You will need to blockoff the fuel pump with a plate, gasket, and 2, 3/8 - 16 x 3/4in bolts. When you go to install the timing cover with the plate and bolts, you will likely not have enough clearance between the oil cooler and the timing cover blockoff plate bolts. These parts are slightly more proud off the timing cover than the OEM cover. BEFORE you install the timing cover, I would recommend removing the oil cooler. That way you will have plenty of space to install the timing cover. This is also a great time to replace the oil-cooler o-rings and lower radiator hose.

if i may ask, Where did you find the CA air cleaner box? You mean the single intake tube that connects to the MAF correct? Did you just get luck on ebay or something or do you have a source they may have more? I have been looking for a good couple years with no luck. My CA 460 came with the K&N and i would like to go back to OEM.
The CA/Mass air air cleaner housing and bracketry that bolts to the inner fender are different - the Speed Density uses the four screws/bolts to hold the upper and lower together, whereas the CA uses the springy lever-style 'bails'. Since the upper is different due to the single 3.5" outlet (Not sure about diameter) for the Mass Air Sensor, they also changed the lower part of the air cleaner housing for the newer latch.. The mounting bracket that holds the lower changed as well, (NOT the same as a SD housing!)
As for the replaceable air cleaner element itself - it is the same for Speed Density and Mass-Air.
