NP 540

Is there a wrecking yard that specializes in "vintage" (older) parts for Fords? I saw a couple of posts about the np540 transmission, a 5 spd with no overdrive. The gear ratio looks perfect for an F150 with an i6. If I could just find one of them and an overdrive unit I would be in mud heaven!

That's a medium truck trans. It's probably not available in a 4WD version, so you're looking at a divorce-mounted transfer case. Add an overdrive and you're getting pretty long. Not saying it can't work, but it wouldn't be my choice.

Thank you. There is another sale - an np435 with an over/underdrive auxilliary bolted up to it and an np205 bolted to that - all married. I have read in a couple of places that the np 435 and np 540 require the same bell housing, and probably has the same rear interface - where the over/under drive would mount. Can anyone answer this question? The ZF 5 would be an easy solution but rebuilts go for $3K, and most want at least $1k for a core. The other option is the Mazda m5od version 2. I am not sure how well that would hold up if I am usually toting a 900 pound camper on top.
