High oil and def consumption help needed.

All,

I just recently returned from a 4500 mile trip towing about 12k and need some help with a couple issues. On the last leg of my trip, I had the following events happen:

-My full DEF tank only lasted about 800 miles. Towing the same weight my tank usually lasts about 2k-2.5k miles.

-I lost about 2 quarts of oil in this same 800 miles (no visible leaks anywhere).

-the final 400 miles I lost another 2 quarts of oil.

Any ideas? The truck is running good with no codes. I am wondering if I popped an oil seal in the exhaust side of the turbo causing the high oil usage and high def usage.

The truck is a bone stock 2014. The only mods are a 4” lift with 35’s.

Thanks.

there's definitely something wrong, should see that high of oil consumption in the exhaust, even with DPF still in place.

I this summer had low oil level in my 2013 on a recent trip. Towing as well. After 24 hours the level returned to normal.

Parked the truck at 1am. First check was at 7am. Motor was still pretty warm and the degas bottle showed elevated coolant level like a hot motor would.

A recheck later that evening showed a normal level.

I recently did another trip all towing for 67xx miles. This time I did an OA and all is well. Normal levels except the last day. Pushed it pretty hard. Same thing.

Have you sent in an Oil Analysis?

I haven’t done an oil analysis yet. I am almost due for a change and will send it at that time. Unfortunately, my oil level never came back up after sitting for a day. It was just-gone.

Now that I am unloaded, I have been checking the oil religiously and there have been no problems. I just seem to lose it while towing heavy at a very fast rate. I am waiting to see how long this tank of def lasts as well.

I just dont don’t want to stop every 250 miles while towing to add a couple of quarts of oil. That will get old quick

What motor oil weight are you running?

You may want to try a different brand of oil just for grins.

I found a spec sheet on the MC 10w30. I have to find a thread to post it in. Not a bad oil at all to use.

I am pretty sure the Motorcraft oil is blended by Phillips66, don't know if it's always the case or not as any oil blender could probably make oil to Ford's specs. I feel like 10w-30 diesel engine oil is more than sufficient for virtually all uses. Have seen and studied a lot of UOA's proving this point. I have also heard (not personally experienced) that some people have consumption issues with Valvoline Premium Blue 5w-40. If I were in the OP's shoes, maybe try a different oil before drawing too many conclusions. You wouldn't think an oil that meets spec would have issues such as this, but it's not the first time I've hear it in regards to this brand.

I'm switching to T5 10w-30 this round (from T6 5w-40) just for grins. I live in deep south Texas where it's as hot as the devils belly button right now and I occasionally tow heavy. I also do slow speeds and a lot of idling. I'll have a UOA run in it after 5k miles.

I'll post what I found from here:

Pertroleum Quality Institute of America

It looks like they tested it:

Ford Motorcraft Super Duty Formula SAE 10W-30
