4WD Noise when coasting

My 2018 F250 only has 4,400 miles on it and today it was snowy / slippery out so I engaged 4WD. I noticed around town (20-25mph) it had a weird noise when coasting so I took it to a local straight road (~40mph) and the noise was even louder.

If I give the truck even the tiniest amount of throttle the noise seems to go away. It's only when fully coasting. I tried to video tape the sound but it doesn't do it full justice.

Is this something I should have looked at?

I assume this isn’t the first time you’ve used the 4wd? If it isn’t, and you’ve never had that noise before, I’d have the dealer look at it since it’s so new. Worst case, if they don’t find anything wrong, there will be a record of it in case something related happens later on.

It's my first time using it with regular speed. The only other time I used it was when I got my RV stuck in my yard trying to pull it out.

I’d get it checked. It doesn’t sound bad necessarily, but my 2006 and 2011 F350’s don’t make any extra noise while in 4wd

since it’s new, maybe something is loose and just needs to be tightened up. Let the dealer do it though.

There's another thread in here somewhere about others having the same experience. I don't recall the outcome if there was one, but noise while coasting is not terribly uncommon.

mine does it too. Dealer said it was normal. Drives me nuts as we have snow 5 months a year.

From being a mechanic back in 1979 - Your description sounds like the ring/pinion in the front axle may not be set up correctly. You can have whine on the drive or coast side. Have you taken it to a dealer and had them listen to it on a test drive with you ?

I use my 4WD a lot. I have never heard any noise at all when engaged and coasting. Once, I even drove 20km on a clear highway because I couldn’t tell the 4WD was engaged. Turned off an ice road and forgot I had it in 4. Ugh. I’m new to the Ford vacuum system so I won’t speculate on what’s wrong, but something is.

My front hub (i think) has a slight and quick rattle when i hit bumpy sections going off road, regardless of 4H or 2H. Did it from day one and never had a problem. Hard to tell from video but if it is loud, I'd take it in. By chance did you check to see if the issue happens when hubs are in Auto vs. Locked?

Dealer told me it was normal after taking a drive with me. I drove two other trucks on their lot and they both made the same sound, if not louder, then my truck. So I chalked it up to normal. I don’t use it enough to make a huge deal amount of it - it’s not meant to be used full time especially at highway speeds.

I posted earlier saying I’ve never heard that sound. Maybe I do have that noise. I don’t get to really listen to the sounds coming from the system because I have another constant annoying sound in the truck that I can not get resolved. Went to the dealer, they laughed and sent me packing. Went on numerous forums and only got joke answers. Ugh. So frustrating. No matter how many times I tell my wife to be quiet, she just keeps on yapping.

ill be here all week folks. Don’t forget to tip your waitress.

My 2019 F350 SD with 2,200 miles on it makes a terrible whine / hum while in 4x4 and coasting . Going in a week from today to get it checked out . Im pretty concerned about it , my 2017 F250
I traded in for it was quiet as a mouse in 4x4 .....

Noise Found !

Ford diagnosed my noise as coming from the transfer case . They had me listen to it running in 4x4 while on the lift and I must say it sounds like its ready to grenade . :-(
At least the problem was found , now to get it repaired .

What was the ultimate diagnosis and repair?

I just had an identical sound during same driving conditions with my 2019 F350 SD and had it into the Ford dealer for service. They diagnosed the noise as coming from the transfer case as well. However, they told me it was normal and customary for the vehicle. Not sure I believe them...
